Lauren Hopkins:
… it seems like so many who competed this year have the goal of sticking around. The only retirements I know of for sure so far this year have been Lauren Mitchell, Houry Gebeshian, Julie Croket, Marine Brevet, Youna Dufournet, Ruby Harrold (though she’s doing NCAA), Marta Pihan-Kulesza, Yu Minboe, Kirsten Beckett, Marcela Torres, Nicole Hitz, and then for the Americans, Amelia Hundley, Brenna Dowell, Maggie Nichols, Rachel Gowey, Alyssa Baumann, and Madison Desch, all of whom will be competing in college.
I’ve also heard Jessica López MIGHT retire but she hasn’t officially announced anything yet and is doing the Swiss Cup in a couple of weeks. The same can be said for a few others, like Vanessa Ferrari for example (she said the Olympics would be her last but now she’s not so sure)…but the women listed above are the only ones I know of who for sure announced retirements. …

It does seem that fewer female (and male) gymnasts have announced retirements after Rio than any other Olympics. A great trend for our sport.
The 2019 European Games is scheduled to be the second edition of the European Games, a multi-sport event for European athletes. It will be held in June 2019 in Minsk, Belarus, having previously been awarded first to the Netherlands and then to Russia.
The Netherlands withdrew citing costs and lack of support, while the next hosting agreement with Russia was provisional on the basis of it addressing concerns raised by an independent WADA investigation into doping in Russia. …

Controlling spending is a key concern for Belarus, which is in recession and has asked the EOC and International Olympic Committee to provide financial support for the games, though it was not clear Friday whether that would be provided. …
Head Coach Sally Batley:
Last week Renmore Gymnastics was honoured to receive two awards, the first ‘Competitive club of the year’, the second ‘Innovative club of the year’. These results in my opinion go hand in hand, we have achieved competitive results by our use of innovation. Our recent successes are a direct result of implementing new methodology in our training, of being open enough to say we are learning, we do not know everything.
Now as the gymnasts start to achieve foundation results within their High Performance pathway I am encountering for the first time a strange phenomenon… judges, coaches, sometimes strangers coming to shake my hand and congratulate us on doing a great job.
Coaches asking how we have achieved these results, judges thanking us for the pleasure of watching the girls compete. Those of you that know me would also know that I do not take compliments very naturally either… normally I would make some excuse for how it’s not as it seems and then change the subject. Well this weekend I fought these natural impulses and I just smiled and thanked those that approached me for their complimentary words …
I’ve been following the progress of Renmore Gymnastics in Galway, Ireland for years. As always success is never overnight. This club has been committed and focused on success for a long, long time. Sally and her team deserve these accolades.
Congratulations.
The most exciting story out of the 2016 FIG Congress was Fujitsu’s video analysis software that can (finally) determine what skills were performed by a gymnast.
… the FIG Executive Committee is very interested by this idea that would allow the reduction of the number of judges needed for competition. …
