Katelyn Ohashi on body image

Katelyn and Maria Caire have a blog where they  post on many things including ethical issues.

Katelyn just started a series featuring excerpts from her diary as a young gymnast:

Most kids at the age of 12 were probably playing video games and doing some chores. Me? I was training at least 36 hours a week, plastered on posters and magazines, representing the US National Team.

I had no voice or option but to live up to the expectations of everyone else, so I experienced these cruel, unwanted body remarks from just about everyone— coaches, fans/gymnastics followers, National team staff, my mother, and even myself. It started when I was 13, barely weighing 70 pounds. …

Dear Standards

Her coach was Valeri Liukin now U.S. Women’s National Team coordinator. I hope Katelyn goes on GymCastic to talk about her training diaries so we can hear the full story of her WOGA experience.

Now that FIG has adopted a form of Parkour / Free Running, some nations will start to formalize the activity. That’s a good thing. Many kids doing Parkour training at Gymnastics clubs are not as safe as they should be.

coaching ‘NBA policy’

Update – Dave Holcomb at Buckeye has had something similar called TAR. (Two Adult Rule). One adult should never be alone even with a group of kids.

Dave Peterson:

We have had a written policy for 25 years that I call the ‘NBA policy’ because it says you should ‘Never Be Alone’ with a minor athlete. Or really, any athlete.

It originally was predicated on the idea that if an injury occurred, you cannot stabilize the neck and call 911 at the same time. Someone else must be present to be able to deal with an emergency. But it has evolved into a protection of our athletes, our coaches and our business.” …

new Bar grips available

We’ve been testing prototypes of these grips out of Canada for a long time. They are finally available for everyone.

Designed by former gymnast Ariel Crawford, the beginner grip has been customized for the first time grip user with small hands.

The advanced grips have firmer leather strong enough for highest difficulty routines.

Both buckle and Velcro are used to hit the sweet spot for security with adjustability.

A built in elastic loop ensures the Velcro strap cannot come undone on the Bars.
