British Columbia schools drop competitive Gymnastics

The governing body for sport for the province’s primary and secondary schools has dropped gymnastics as a sanctioned sport.

BC School Sports (BCSS) said the rationale was based on low enrollment numbers and gymnastics typically not taking place within the school itself.

In the 2022-23 season, there were only 453 athletes across B.C. enrolled in school gymnastics, according to the BCSS. …

The decision by BCSS is extremely upsetting to Terry Mitruk, the gymnastics coach at Sutherland Secondary in North Vancouver.

β€œIt doesn’t cost them anything extra. We are a small community. So, the workload is not significantly more. If it’s a workload issue, then tell us and help us resolve that issue,” Mitruk told Global News. …

R.I.P Boris Bajin

When I was young, Boris Bajin was the Canadian WAG National Coach. Our leader for 5 consecutive Olympic Games and many World Championships.

We spent weeks preparing for his visits to the Gym where he would evaluate skills and physical ability. I still vividly recall his “Elite Testing” events.

They were highest priority on our annual calendar.

I was sad to hear that Boris passed away at the age of 90 at his home in Toronto.

FIG running out the clock on RUS

I don’t want Russian gymnasts competing in the Paris Olympics.

YES it’s rotten for Russian athletes who don’t support Putin’s war, if there are any.

But banning Russia totally is the least bad scenario for 2024.

FIG President Morinari Watanabe echoed the IOC position that Russians should be allowed to compete as independents, as they did in Tokyo. I disagree.

If any Russians compete in Paris all headlines will be about that controversial decision, degrading the actually Olympic ideals for the nations of the world that did not invade their neighbours.

AND it looks like FIG will continue to delay a final decision until it’s too late for them to be included.
