judging E-score on your phone

The Elevien app looks quite good. Simple. Similar to judging diving.

Click through to watch VIDEOS of how it worked.

Andrew Tombs (Vice President of FIG MAG Technical Committee and Executive Director of Sport, British Gymnastics), Tom Thingvold (Vice President of the European Gymnastics Federation) and Nikolaos Provias (Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Technical Committee Member, European Gymnastics Federation) used Elevien app to test our real-time judging feature on a high-scale competition. …

I’m wondering whether we’ll soon have a Gymnastics Judging AI program telling us the final score. 😀

1/1 twisting Dive Roll

These excellent skills have disappeared from Men’s Gymnastics.

Too bad.

The Storror Parkour group from the U.K. use them a lot in their videos.

(I never mastered the thing, myself.)

Lia-Monica Fontaine tumbling

Lia-Monica Fontaine trains at WimGym. She was Canadian Novice Champion in 2022.

Remember the name.

Hashimoto Daiki wins All Japan. Again.

The Olympic Champion competed despite suffering a lower-back stress fracture and twisted right ankle.

He didn’t need to compete as he’d already qualified for the World Championships in Antwerp from 30 September to 8 October.

Recall Kohei won this meet 10 times in a row from 2008 to 2017.

Bars – Porcupine Pad

Andrew Vetter really likes the NEW Porcupine Bar Pad from Tumbl Trak.

It gives gives feedback to gymnasts, helping them learn where how close to the Bar they actually are. It was developed by Brett Wargo.

I’d need 2 or 3 so it could be used for Straddle Giants, as well.

This documentary has been playing in a series of film festivals.

All-Japan Championships AA results

Sadly, both Yamada Chiharu and Yamaguchi Sara left the competition with what looked like serious knee injuries.

🥇 Watanabe Hazuki 106.963 (53.598, 53.365)
🥈 Miyata Shoko 106.797 (53.198, 53.599)
🥉 Kishi Rina 106.764 (53.032, 53.732)

Kishi is a first-year senior. As a junior last year, she placed 12th at the NHK Trophy. #THE #DEPTH

Kishi had a solid Yurchenko double last year but it looks like she’s improved across the board on her other events. Japanese WAG is becoming like MAG where they are just churning out SO many athletes at ridiculously high levels, it’s almost impossible to guess who can make teams!

Rounding out the top eight here are…

4. Fukasawa Kokoro 106.664
5. Hatakeda Chiaki 105.498
6. Sakaguchi Ayaka 105.032
7. Okamura Mana 104.663
8. Nakamura Haruka 103.664

Ashikawa Urara is 14th but put up the top beam score of 14.166. Yamaguchi Sara didn’t compete floor today.

Kim Bui autobiography

The legend — Kim Bui — represented Germany from 2004 until the 2022 European Championships in Munich. Three Olympics. Six World Championships. Always a fan favourite.

Though reluctant at first to write a career retrospective, she decided to go ahead hoping that sharing her story will help others.

“The hardest chapter to write was the one on eating disorders,” she said. “I had never talked about it until then. …”

Kim Bui on her battle with bulimia: “I want to say that you… are not alone”

NCAA Coaches Well-Being Study

In Women’s Artistic Gymnastics, being a full-time NCAA coach is just about the best job in the world.

KJ Kindler makes about $555,000+ / year, for example.

I doubt she’d leave NCAA coaching for any other job. 😀

A study published January 2023 looks at how NCAA coaches are supporting student-athletes … while also caring for their own mental health.

What impact do changes in recruiting and roster management during the pandemic have on their jobs?

What support is desired by coaches to help them navigate the challenges they and the athletes on their teams face?

Over 6,000 head and assistant coaches across all three NCAA divisions answered a short survey …
