Physical Prep – CHALLENGE each gymnast

If you want optimum results each athlete needs an individualized training program.

Resistance needs to be increased frequently otherwise gains will be less than they could be. I like to change the specific conditioning on the first of the month, the general conditioning on the 15th of the month.

During peak season they go to a maintenance program and focus on routines.

Nick Ruddock gives a good example of how you might increase resistance on rope climb.

Kelly Manjak, coach of Olympic gold medalist Kyle Shewfelt, often says he wants to use no more than 3 progressions for each target skill.

If that doesn’t work, … consider adding a 4th progression.

He wants to reach the objective efficiently. Specifically.

I’d agree.

First off question your conditioning program. Many of our exercises we prescribe because of tradition.

Why rope climb? What is the purpose?

Many of our conditioning exercises are too general. Too many are directed towards muscular endurance when we need muscular strength / power.
