men’s Gymnastics landing deductions

Some of the deductions are summarized in this video tutorial.

toes together, heels apart

Though it’s less aesthetically pleasing, I don’t think we should deduct for this kind of position.

Many gymnasts cannot keep heels and toes together due to their anatomy.

Clearly FIG rules reward difficulty too much relative to execution. There’s too much incentive to chuck double fronts and Yurchenko triple twist despite a very low chance of landing safely. I’m embarrassed for FIG WTC. The E-score judges are ranking, not judging. Ranking in a very small range.

University of Texas swimmer $740,000

The NCAA rules remind me of the bad old days when professionals could not compete in the Olympics. Sooner or later the NCAA are going to have to come to terms with allowing student athletes to profit from their sports.

American collegiate sport allows EVERYONE to profit … aside from the athletes. 😦

This loophole might speed the process.

Singapore’s Joseph Schooling, set to be a junior at the University of Texas, won the gold medal in the 100-meter butterfly at the Rio Olympics …

The achievement – Singapore’s first medal in Rio — qualified him for an award of about $740,000 from the Singapore National Olympic Council that he will be able to keep without forfeiting his remaining college swimming eligibility.

Prior to the NCAA rules change in 2015, that would not have been possible. …

Under the incentive program’s rules, Schooling will have to give 20% of his award money to the Singapore Swimming Association, but he’ll still be left with a tidy sum. …

Men’s pirouetting deductions

The rules on Men’s Horizontal Bar are stupid. 1 1/2 pirouetting elements are overvalued so almost every gymnast uses them.

Deductions are not as severe as in WAG, but they are severe. It’s very easy to suffer a 0.3 or 0.5 deduction.

The problem had been that FIG judges were not enforcing these rules. Instead of a 0.3 deduction, they’d take only 0.1, for example.

But at Worlds 2015 evaluation suddenly became more severe. I asked judges at Worlds if a message had been sent to start enforcing these rules more accurately. They had not.

Here’s one of the best you’ll ever see. Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

It’s obvious that those overused elements should be devalued. Unfortunately they’ve not been devalued in the most recent DRAFT Code of Points. We’ll suffer another 4 years. 😦

How do we feel about that? 🙂

Declare a truce for the two weeks of the Olympics.

Olympics brings religions together

Update – Several commenters have noted that Aliya’s father is of Tatar descent, where many are Muslim. But that Aliya has not declared her personal religious beliefs. The team in the past has visited the Russian Orthodox church before competitions.

Awe-inspiring performances in a close match-up between American gymnasts Simone Biles and Aly Raisman, and Russian Aliya Mustafina, are a cross-section of faith, race and nationality …

UPDATENBC’s Al Trautwig apologizes for comments on Simone Biles’ adoptive parents

Good news. Trautwig eventually did the right thing.

But browsing his twitter feed for the first time makes me less impressed than ever with the non-gymnastics expert on the NBC commentary team. He’s frequently arrogant, negative and combative.

I finally watched some NBC delayed prime time coverage last night.  They covered very few routines over a random time line.

Knowledgable gymnastics fans should follow instead the NBC web coverage with Jim Watson, Jonathan Horton and Courtney Kupets Carter. (NBC log-in required.) Or use a VPN to watch via the British coverage.

This curmudgeonly tweet resulted in angry stream of replies.

Simone Biles was adopted by her grandparents. Simone calls them her parents. Mom & Dad.

Perhaps it’s time to throw out that old black & white TV.
