interview with Stella Umeh

24 years after her own Olympics, the Canadian and UCLA superstar reflects on Rio. Code changes. The decrease in “artistry”.

A very interesting discussion.

Rio Olympic Gymnastics medals

medal table

China has been the dominant nation at the past two Olympic Games, but in Rio the USA, led by Biles, was number one with 12 overall medals. Their haul includes four golds, along with six silvers and two bronzes.

Following up on their stunning success in London in 2012, Great Britain surpassed itself with its best-ever results, ending with six medals, including two historic golds, their first in Artistic Gymnastics.

Until the very last moment the Russians weren’t certain to take part in the Games, but they proudly collected eight medals, though just one title.

With only two bronze medals, China dropped to the 11th on the medal table, behind host Brazil.

I understand that medals are the only thing that matters for funding in China. No doubt they’ll be a shake up in the coaching staff.

Looking at the Men’s competition only, GBR was the top nation.

toes together, heels apart

Though it’s less aesthetically pleasing, I don’t think we should deduct for this kind of position.

Many gymnasts cannot keep heels and toes together due to their anatomy.

HPTC Gymnastics Camp, Idaho

Another terrific year at Camp. I’ve attended most since it launched in Couer d’Alene. This was as good as any in the past.

Olympic Gold medalist Daniela Silivas was once again our headliner.

At this point I’d call Laurie the one of the favourites for World Champion 2017.

Olympians should stay off social media

During the Olympic Games.

They should have people filtering communications from the media and general public. I heard of many who were distracted. Including Cata Ponor.

Bea Gheorghisor posted an exhaustive review of the social media issues.

Fact is that Cata’s comeback for Rio was fantastic. It’s clear she was the best choice for Romanian Olympian.

UPDATE – On Gymternet Clan I read that Cata Ponor has deleted her official Instagram and Twitter accounts. Should you see any accounts that are posing as her … they are fake accounts.
