human rights in Qatar

I’m still planning to attend Worlds 2018 in Qatar. That would be my 3rd visit. I like the tiny nation and the people there.

The German Bundesliga (soccer) champions are in Qatar for their January winter training camp. For the 8th time.

Human Rights Watch’s Wenzel Michalski criticizes the trip, urging the club to publicly address human rights issues.

‘Bayern Munich cannot remain silent’

Here’s the other major issue:

Last summer, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE, and Egypt cut off diplomatic ties with Doha and imposed a land, sea, and air blockade on the Gulf state.

The quartet accuses Qatar of funding “extremist” groups and being too close to its regional rival, Iran, accusations the Qataris vehemently deny.

coaching course Edmonton, Canada

Congratulations to those who completed sections of the new Canadian Competition 1 coaching course. Apparatus and Sport Science modules.

WAG coaches

Thanks to my partner clinicians Tracey Frith and Kim Baksh, as well as our hosts at Ortona Gymnastics, an amazing facility shared with University of Alberta sports.

Our course was organized by the Alberta Gymnastics Federation.

International gymnast Bobby Kriangkum came in to assist with the 5th and final MAG day.

The revised National Coaching Certification Program is still not widely understood in Canada, particularly by those coaches who went through the old system.

One NEW thing — coaches need not certify in Foundations before signing up for the Comp 1 course. But they do need to certify in Comp 1 before registering for Comp 2.

JO Level 1 – JO Level 10

Talking to coaches who managed to get their kids to compete so early after the holidays, one highlight is the host hotel. First opened 1888, it’s weird and wonderful.

Tag on a winter holiday to this meet. There’s great skiing at Sunshine and Lake Louise.

easing military tensions on the Korean peninsula

If North Korea participates in the Winter Olympics, it will be a truce. And — perhaps — the beginning of improved communication / cooperation.

I’ve not heard of any athlete refusing to go for reasons of personal safety.

The U.S. Olympic Committee is committed to compete though a few American politicians have discussed boycott.
