My preference is to teach beginners a straight leg hurdle, with late lunge. Tammy Biggs talks about the pros and cons of straight leg vs bent leg hurdle here.
Straight leg is cleaner, for sure.
My two favourite round-off drills could be added to Jason’s list.
β’ “cartoff” (cartwheel to run backwards)
β’ fly round-off on trampoline (feet together round-off)
Both are easy for beginners. Neither allows the kids to pike down.
As a young coach, I almost jumped in a vehicle and drove 3 days to Montreal to watch Nadia win the 1976 Olympics.
It seemed to far. Too expensive. I didn’t go.
My mistake.
Her performance in Montreal was one of the great stories of our sport.
Nadia had a lot of difficulty. But β Nellie Kim had more. Nadia was more impressive to me for her astonishing execution.

One of the BIG stories of the meet was the return of Max Whitlock, the greatest British gymnast of all time. With nothing more to prove, now age-33, Max qualified for both the Pommel and P Bar Finals, but didn’t medal. This time.
