Danell Leyva – actor

When Danell Leyva trained gymnastics, he needed to devote 100 percent of his time and effort to become a triple Olympic medalist.

“Now that I’m acting, I’m doing the same,” Leyva said recently. “One hundred percent of my time and effort and focus is surrounding acting and the acting world.”

That leaves no time for gymnastics. …

Leyva moved from Miami to California in December, four months after bagging two silver medals in Rio. He signed up for acting classes, filmed two commercials (one already aired), appeared in a Nickelodeon show and was a choreography consultant for “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.”

Biggest of all, Leyva bought and opened a production company with one of his managers.

It’s called “Parallel Entertainment,” an obvious homage to Leyva’s best gymnastics event …

Melissa Doucette – Power Tumbler

Melissa is competing this weekend at the U.S. Championships in Milwaukee.

Doucette got her start in gymnastics at age 5, competing until she was 12 when she suffered a serious shoulder injury.

“I quit gymnastics and found diving,” she said. …

“Diving was fun,” Doucette said. “But it didn’t give me the same pleasure that gymnastics did. It was my first love. I found my way back.”

She returned … and eventually earned an athletic scholarship to Alaska. …

Canadian Men’s National teams named

“It was very difficult selecting the 2017-18 men’s national teams, as never before has there been so much depth in the Canadian men’s program,” said Tony Smith, national team director for men’s artistic gymnastics at Gymnastics Canada. …

Camp starts next week. Canada will be deciding on their teams for World Championships Montreal from October 2-8, and 2017 Universiade in Taipei in August.
