another interesting Nagornyy interview
Many athletes sound scripted. Not Nikita.
He’s got BIG goals.
Let’s take Alexey Nemov, everyone knew him!
He was one of the most famous athletes in the country. Remember the Athens Olympics – the whole world was cheering for him, he got fame even from failures. That video was filmed when Russian gymnastics was in a bit of a hole, there were no big victories.
When Artur Dalaloyan became the World all-around champion, the attention came right away. He was a guest on Night Urgant, people started to recognize him on the streets, he started getting invited everywhere. Artur told me how it was completely unexpected for him.
… we need to work harder and win – and everything will happen for us.
Regarding the coverage of gymnastics, yes, there are issues with it. Although, after Emin Garibov started working [as the head of marketing in the federation], things started getting better. He tries to change the current situation, to help us. For example, we’ve never had such high-quality streams of the Russian Championships like we did this year in Penza. It was televised at the same level of quality as the European Championships. Everyone was happy. I even watched my routines after the competition, my parents watched it. We’re developing. The important thing is to keep going. …

Gymnastics Canada / USAG support Pride Month
Have they done this in the past?
Good move. I’m happy to see USAG support their members and fans who are LGBTQ.
It sends an important signal. Headquarters are in Indiana, home of famously homophobic Vice President Pence.
Gymnastics Canada is on board too.
Since 1982, the Constitution of Canada has guaranteed fundamental human rights to the LGBT community in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
she BELIEVED she could …
… so she did.
Men’s NCAA may show scores out of a PERFECT 10
Division 1 Men’s College Gymnastics in the USA continues to decline. One day there may only be College clubs. 😕
To improve the situation the Men’s College Gymnastics Association are considering some changes:
- do we make our scoring more understandable?
- How do we make our competitions easier to follow?
- How can we make our product more attractive for television?
- How do we increase parity and competitiveness within our competitions?
Proposal: Use a 10.0 conversion system in conjunction with the open ended scoring system
Straw Vote: 21 in favor; 4 against; 11 abstentions.
Some of the top coaches are strongly against.
If a gymnast scored 14.00 FIG they would flash a 9.75.
Personally, I think it’s worth a try.
Spencer and @papaliukin point out that a BETTER change would be for Men’s teams to provide good, consistent scoring, University media coverage and online video.
Since the Men are already posting competition videos after the fact on Road to Nationals, I’d like to see them increasingly use that site for LIVE coverage. LIVE scoring, etc.
There’s much more under consideration. Click through for Details.
FIG wants to scan gymnasts at Jr Worlds
Luba found this on the workplan for Junior Worlds on the FIG website.
Certainly that data would have to be kept confidential.
