Minamino and Dukhno grab Junior World All-Around titles on a night of surprises in the Philippines

Arsenii Dukhno is an amazing talent who’s only challenge for the future in Senior is a lack of Ring strength holds. BUT he had a fall on the last apparatus — H Bar — and we wondered if he could stay ahead of the terrific competition. It was an excellent meet with relatively few errors from the top group.

A few notes from the 2025 Junior World Artistic Gymnastics Championships Men’s All-around FINAL.

  • Danila Leykin looks to have potential to qualify for Senior U.S. teams. He could be a counting score on P Bars and H Bar already. Pommels could get there, as well.
  • is Philippines the fastest improving Gymnastics nation? With Karl Eldrew joining his brother in Senior … look out.
  • volume way too high in that small hotel ballroom. My noise cancelling headphones helped.
  • I’m wondering if we need announce every inquiry to the arena audience. Better would be to announce ONLY those scores that change. It was definitely a distraction. Also, why are the judges changing so many D-scores? Get it right in the first place.
  • remember the name ➙ Volodymyr Golovin (Ukraine)
  • Canadian Thomas Tittley withdrew from the World Jr Gymnastics Championships due to a neck injury suffered training H Bar just before Podium Training. Happily, it turned out to be minor.
  • Simone Speranza amazing Triple Tuck knees together STICK 🇮🇹 on Rings. Once FIG rules change in 2026, I expect many to stop using Triple Back dismount. But not Simone.
  • GREAT for the fans to have gymnasts on all 6 apparatus. The meet might be rushed for the gymnasts, however.
  • In Győr, Hungary 2019, the Jr. winner was Shinnosuke Oka who went on to be Olympic champion.

Chinese men strike gold as Junior World Championships get underway in Manila

  • Yang Lanbin, Wang Chengcheng and Zheng Ao 1st Jr. Men’s World team title
  • Arsenii Dukhno (AIN) leads in the All-Around with 82.065 despite a major error on P Bars and minor problems on H Bar.  First on Floor and Vault. 
  • Karl Eldrew Yulo (PHI), the younger brother of Olympic champion Carlos Yulo, was the gymnast most cheered.  Very similar at the same age.  Eldrew qualified for Floor, Vault, H Bar and All-Around Finals. 
  • Danila Leykin (USA) leads on P Bars and H Bar with terrific and interesting routines.  USA very excited about finishing Bronze in team.  

Watching Podium training, I expected a lot of falls. BUT performances in competition were good, overall.

Falls mostly on:

  • Double Front on Floor
  • Under-rotated H Bar dismounts
  • Pommels, especially dismounts

Many fell on Vault landings, but not many felt unsafe. Most of the nations made good decisions on difficulty.

  • Remember the name ➙ Nikita Netreba, Poland.
  • Remember the name ➙ Aaron Esner, Netherlands.  Tons of potential. 

Looks to me like we will have more 1/1 twisting Double Tuck dismounts off P Bars in the future. Evan McPhillips (GBR) and Dukhno, for example. All 3 Colombia gymnasts used Flyaway 1/1 twisting Double Tuck dismounts off the end.

Hey. Could Colombia qualify a full team to the L.A. Olympics? They have 2 very strong all-around gymnasts in Ángel Barajas and Camilo Vera.

I recall well when Taiwan qualified a full men’s team unexpectedly. It could happen again.

Without watching scores, I’d ASSuMEd Japan had beaten China due to higher difficulty. I was way wrong.

AA Final Qualifiers

Arsenii Dukhno from that Putin nation was easily the top AA gymnast. And he did not have a perfect competition. He’ll definitely contend in the AA at the Los Angeles Olympics. Amazing Vault and Tumbling for a gymnast with a build more suited to swinging.

  • Hashimoto Daike had 4 of the top scores on 6 apparatus!

World Gymnastics Championships 2025 Jakarta. 

Gymnasts warm-up in the arena for Event Finals. Some did a lot. Some very little. Each has their own strategy.

Vault

Without question, the greatest Men’s VAULT Final in history.

After our Olympic Champ Yulo delivered near perfection on his 1st vault, we thought the legend Davtyan couldn’t catch him due to lower difficulty. BUT it nearly happened. What a rivalry!

Beam

That might be the greatest BEAM Final in history. It’s so often been a disaster.

Following the Beam Final, FIG posted Ellie Black’s Fair Play Award from the Paris Olympics. Everyone loves Ellie, in good position to qualify for her 5th Olympics.

Her Beam was fantastic, by the way.

P Bars

Floor

Thrilled Sigihara Aiko at age-26 is World Champion. Gold on Floor, Bronze on Beam.

I was disappointed for Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, finishing 4th. Fantastic tumbling.

Ruby and Abigail are great on Floor, as are their GBR male teammates.

H Bar

A super strong field of competitors. But there were 2 falls and a number of bent elbow errors.

Brody is World Champion for the second time. Recall he only barely qualified for the Final.

We can argue Brody v Daiki for Gold. But Brody does have 0.2 higher difficulty.

I was happy to see Joe finish Bronze rather than 4th. That was a good set with BIG Triple Pike dismount

For each of the events, the Hits, the Misses and the Surprises will be reviewed.

Floor

Jake Jarman (GBR): the bronze medalist at the 2024 Games totally delivered with a tough routine (and didn’t fall…)
Carlos Yulo (PHI): the Olympic champion nailed it again with his awesome execution. He may increase his D score in the final
Kameron Nelson (USA): 1st World Championships, 1st gymnast to include 2 triple backs in the same routine. It paid off
Minami Kazuki (JPN): 2X silver medalist on FX at WC, one of the best Japanese FX specialists
Milad Karimi (KAZ): regularly qualifies for FX finals and won bronze in Antwerp. Solid routine.
Luke Whitehouse (GBR): the 3X European Champion is the 2nd Brit in the final

Jakarta 2025 Qualifications Misses Dog

Several gymnasts have reported difficulties with the Taishan floor podiums, noting that numerous athletes experienced falls, particularly during double fronts.
Harry Hepworth (GBR): he got luckier on rings; out of the three British FX guys, one was bound to trip up and miss the final (he fell after his double front)
Ray Zapata (ESP): the Tokyo silver medalist and Paris finalist had a bummer of a fall during his tuck double front, but his routine was pretty solid overall
Eddie & Kevin Penev (BUL): the Penev Brothers provide an enjoyable viewing experience; Kevin is the third reserve and Eddie attained a slightly lower score.

Jakarta 2025 Qualifications Surprises Dog 6

Tikumporn Suritornta (THA): I don’t think many people predicted the qualification of the 27 year old gymnast from Samut Sakhon in Thailand. Great surprise and great upset!
Krisztofer Mészáros (HUN): It’s kinda a surprise, but not really, since Titi is all about those floor podiums. Super cool to see him make it to the finals in Jakarta

Men’s Jakarta Worlds qualification day 1

Oct 19, 2025 we had SIX subdivisions of the best male gymnasts in the world. Two more subdivisions go Oct 20 — with a much better idea what they need to do to make the apparatus final? Triple back? Or go safe?

Leaders so far.

Since there is no team competition this time, gymnasts are looking to qualify to Apparatus and/or AA Finals. Some have a goal to improve their previous best ranking at Worlds.

Difficulty — and difficulties — take centre stage as curtain rises on World Championships in Jakarta

A few notes I took over 12 hours of competition:

Worst news of the day was hearing Asher Hong injured in training on Floor. He had to withdraw.

There were more falls and mistakes than I expected. And it wasn’t always gambling on Triple Back. In fact, most of the Triples were quite safe. Some will keep that dismount even after FIG devalues Jan. 2026.

  • JAPAN in the 1st subdivision.
  • One audience concern with this Individual format for Worlds is that some apparatus are empty when none of the gymnasts in the group have decided to compete that event.
  • Judging was VERY SLOOOWWW to start.
  • Daiki Hashimoto looks good to win the AA at Worlds 2025. He’s easily leading the all-around qualification scores, despite errors.
  • I predicted the other Olympic champion, OKA Shinnosuke, to be top 2 AA — but he had many problems in the qualification round. Hopefully he can get it together in the Final.
  • Tarrab from Syria stuck Handspring Double Front on Vault.  Excellent gymnasts here from all over the world. 
  • All 3 Japanese gymnasts are using Liukin on H Bar. It’s the cool new skill to add for the top gymnasts.
  • Minami on Floor has awesome difficulty.  He could win the Floor final with better control.

Good news story for those following Donnell Whittenburg‘s long, long career is that he’s having his best Worlds ever. Many questioned whether he’s still got it at age-31. The answer is … YES.

LEGEND. And lesson in persistence.

  • Kameron Nelson competed his best Floor ever since he started including 2 Triples. Respect. His mom, coach and judge, is here cheering with us.
  • Caio Souza from Brazil is looking better than ever.
  • Fan favourite Milad Karimi looks great, as well.
  • Two teams I love to watch: Swiss men and Swedish women. Over the years those programs emphasize form, line, rhythm, artistry.
  • We already know Angel Barajas is a superstar at age-19. 4th AA with 80.664 after day 1.
  • Talking to some of the male gymnasts … They like the Floor in the competition arena and warm-up Gym. On podium. Dislike the same Floor in the training Gym, on concrete. It’s too hard.
  • I’m thrilled there are very few Rybalko skills on H Bar at Worlds. It’s nearly impossible to do those skills well.
  • Pommels Final is the most competitive with all the specialists here. Surprisingly, I’d say H Bar is the 2nd most competitive. Vault has been weak compared with previous Worlds.
