Worlds ’25 Apparatus Finals – day 2

World Gymnastics Championships 2025 Jakarta.

Gymnasts warm-up in the arena for Event Finals. Some did a lot. Some very little. Each has their own strategy.

Vault

Without question, the greatest Men’s VAULT Final in history.

After our Olympic Champ Yulo delivered near perfection on his 1st vault, we thought the legend Davtyan couldn’t catch him due to lower difficulty. BUT it nearly happened. What a rivalry!

Beam

That might be the greatest BEAM Final in history. It’s so often been a disaster.

Following the Beam Final, FIG posted Ellie Black’s Fair Play Award from the Paris Olympics. Everyone loves Ellie, in good position to qualify for her 5th Olympics.

Her Beam was fantastic, by the way.

P Bars

LEGEND. G.O.A.T.

Floor

Thrilled Sigihara Aiko at age-26 is World Champion. Gold on Floor, Bronze on Beam.

I was disappointed for Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, finishing 4th. Fantastic tumbling.

Ruby and Abigail are great on Floor, as are their GBR male teammates.

H Bar

A super strong field of competitors. But there were 2 falls and a number of bent elbow errors.

Brody is World Champion for the second time. Recall he only barely qualified for the Final.

We can argue Brody v Daiki for Gold. But Brody does have 0.2 higher difficulty.

I was happy to see Joe finish Bronze rather than 4th. That was a good set with BIG Triple Pike dismount

Texas State to add NCAA Gymnastics team

Great news.

Texas State will add a women’s gymnastics program, as reported by local reporter Jakob Rodríguez.

The university will fund the team with at least $1.2 million annually beginning in FY2028, meaning the team could start as early as the 2028 season.

Worlds ’25 Apparatus Finals – day 1

World Gymnastics Championships 2025 Jakarta.

Gymnasts warm-up in the arena for Event Finals. This competition is LONG, of course, with only 1 routine at a time, so many go back to the training Gym to stay warmed-up.

Floor

Superb Final. Huge difficulty. Really well done.

Vault

Terrible Final.

I expected Deng to medal. Warm-ups were strong. But she ran over the horse and got a zero on her first vault. Judges wouldn’t let her do a second.

Schönmaier tried upgrading to Cheng  — but lost 2.0 for using only 1 hand.

16-year-old Lia-Monica Fontaine is the breakout star on Vault. Tons of potential here. And very good in the AA, as well. She’s destined to be on the Canadian team for years to come.

Pommels

Toughest final, in my opinion. Of the top routines, any could have been World Champion. Scores are that close.

Bars

After the awful Vault Final, Bars was one of the best ever. Fantastic performances.

In fact, the routine everyone will remember from Jakarta will be G.O.A.T. Kalyia Nemour hitting this set.

Skye hit her best Bars in some time. Ever?

Zoja Szekely did a good routine, but couldn’t land her dismount. I understand she was too injured from Vault the previous day. I admire her courage. But with 20 / 20 hindsight, she should have withdrawn and let the Reserve gymnast go.

Rings

Amazing Final. Superhuman strength.

Dismount landing critical.

This sets up Donnell for the coming quadrennial. USA can always use a top Ring man who can compete other apparatus, if needed. Along with Asher Hong, it would not be a weak event.

Zhang Boheng and Adem Asil are incredibly good at Rings for AA gymnasts.

Zhang said she was satisfied with her performance. “I would give myself 95 out of 100 today,” she said.

“My goal was to do my routines as I trained them. I didn’t expect to make the podium, so this result really motivates me for future competitions.”

An amazing Bronze medal, considering she only competes a Kasamatu vault with average execution.

Well … quite a poor All-around Final, I must say. How many gymnasts had zero falls?

How many fell on Wolf turn?

Disappointing after the excellent Men’s Final the previous night.

Leanne Wong had an excellent meet. Many were doubting her Cheng Vault (including me) — and she proved the haters wrong. It was fairly good, putting her back in medal contention.

Gold was decided on the very last routine — Angelina on Floor. Fans will be criticizing the judges on that score for years to come. Did they get the Out of Bounds deduction wrong? Were the turns evaluated correctly?

Controversial.

Judging at Worlds was better than ever, I felt. But E-scores are too close together. A routine far superior in every way will only get, perhaps, 0.2 higher than the average routine.

How long do we have to wait before FIG compares our human judging D-panels with Fujitsu Gymnastics Judging Support System video analysis?

Very cool.

IF this works in real time, we are not far off having video analysis checking D-score of judges. They should be flagged instantly if Fujitsu disagrees.

I’m sure E-score is much further off. But is possible with A.I.

Summing-up Men’s AA Final

World Gymnastics Championships 2025 Jakarta.

A fantastic all-around final this year. Most of the 24 competitors improved from qualifications. There were surprisingly few falls.

As expected, Noe Seifert won Bronze. 😀

  1. Hashimoto Daiki, Japan, 85.131
  2. Zhang Boheng, China, 84.333
  3. Noe Seifert, Switzerland, 82.831

I knew Noe was clean and consistent, but had no expectation he could finish ahead of the defending Olympic Champion. Congratulations. Switzerland is celebrating you.

5. Oka Shinnosuke, Japan, 81.797

Noe is brilliant on Pommel Horse, the apparatus that most helps your AA score.

I was impressed with the effort made by Zhang Boheng to win the Worlds title. He didn’t look 100% to me yet was still amazing.

Daiki arrived Jakarta feeling good. And would not be denied. Comparisons with Uchimura are justified. So good. So consistent.

Hashimoto overcomes Zhang for third consecutive World title

  • Shi Cong (CHN), Oka, Angel Barajas (COL), Daniel Marinov (AIN), and Krisztofer Meszaros (HUN) made up the top eight. All great.
  • Judging had surprisingly few controversies. Some appeals were approved, making me think the judges are open-minded enough to consider whether or not they had made the right call on D-score.
  • Angel BARAJAS was the break out Men’s NEW superstar of 2024. For 2025 I’d call it Daniel Marinov from that nation with the murdering dictator-for-life.
  • As a spectator, I felt putting 4 men up on each of 6 apparatus was an improvement. A faster competition. We need interview the athletes, however, to see if there is enough time between rotations.
  • As expected, IOC wants NO international sports competitions hosted in Indonesia after they denied visas to Israel for the World Gymnastics Championships 2025 Jakarta. We cannot trust the government.
  • Many are worried Trump will cancel visas for athletes competing World Cup and/or Olympics 2028.
  • pinning numbers on gymnasts at Worlds is totally unnecessary.
  • BIG SCREEN in the arena displaying Fujitsu VIDEO analysis technology. Examples only, however. BUT it is a step forward.
  • quite a few gymnasts used twisting prone fall skills on Floor. The Kyle Shewfelt era of artistic FX might be returning.
