Charlotte Sullivan profile

JOHN CRUMLISH:

International Gymnast Online kicks off its annual tradition of holiday-themed features on gymnasts from around the world who reflect on the current year and forecast the coming year. First up is New Zealand’s Charlotte Sullivan, who earlier this year earned her country’s first FIG World Challenge Cup medal.

“The most memorable moments for me in 2015 would have to be winning a bronze medal on beam at the World Cup in Anadia, Portugal, and also receiving a full-ride gymnastics scholarship to the University of Iowa,” Sullivan said. …

Lisa Verschueren forced to retire

On Sunday, Verschueren was studying at home, a day after headlining the annual Gymgala in Antwerp, when she realized she didn’t feel well. She sought medical treatment and was immediately hospitalized with a heart condition, thought to be a congenital abnormality. It’s something she could live with under normal circumstances, but not as a high-performing elite gymnast.

Verschueren is on a defibrillator now and will soon undergo surgery to correct the defect, but doctors advised against her returning to the gym. While it was a difficult decision for Verschueren and her family, it was a necessary one, and she has officially retired from gymnastics. …

… She competed at four World Championships (2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015) and three European Championships (2011, 2012 and 2014). Belgian Champion in 2014, she got stronger and steadier with years, gaining experience for what would have been the ultimate goal: the Olympic Games. …

another Orozco comeback

He’s done it before. I have no doubt he can do it again. 🙂

Nick Zaccardi:

When John Orozco tore his right Achilles on Aug. 11, 2010, a doctor told him he probably shouldn’t do gymnastics anymore, and he probably would not be going to the Olympics.

Orozco competed 11 months later, won the U.S. all-around title in 2012 and earned a place on the London Olympic team.

When Orozco tore his right Achilles for a second time on June 15, he was told he’d be out about one year.

“I said, ‘That’s the wrong answer again,’” Orozco recalled last month. …

“chin pillows” for head position

I’ve always loved these drills. But I’ve never seen the concept used so extensively as at Michigan Academy.

Note that other head positions are effective and sometimes superior to neutral on some skills. The neutral head position is aesthetic. And a good starting point for beginners.

Inspired by that clip, Gymnast Crossing tried another system to keep the head neutral (VIDEO). 🙂
