proposed changes in Vault values

From this list I’d say Rudi looks the most over-valued. (Smart to train.)

It’s very similar to Kasamatsu + 1/1 (what WAG calls Tsuk double twist) yet that vault is worth 0.2 less.

– Produnova (7.0 > 6.4)
– Rudi (6.2 > 5.8)
– Tsukahara full (5.2 > 4.8)
– Tsukahara 1.5 (5.5 > 5.2)
– Tsukahara double full (6.0 > 5.6)
– Tsukahara 2.5 (6.5 > 6.0)
– FTY (5.0 > 4.6)
– 1.5 Yurchenko (5.3 > 5.0)
– DTY (5.8 > 5.4)
– Amanar (6.3 > 5.8)
– Lopez (5.6 > 5.2)
– “Mustafina” (6.0 > 5.6)
– Cheng (6.4 > 6.0)

… The vault devaluations are to account for the gymnasts losing 0.5 in requirements on the other three apparatuses. Requirements are worth 2.0 instead of 2.5.

Personally I’d prefer the Produnova be banned rather than count on FIG WTC to massage the rules to the point where dangerous ones are no longer attempted.

What woman competed the best Rudi all time? Alicia?

Produnova downgraded from 7.0 to 6.4

I’d be happy if FIG WTC banned the Handspring double front vault for WAG (for now). And that Handspring triple front for MAG (for now).

Both are far too dangerous.

Alternatively the vault must be better evaluated to the point where there is ZERO chance of making a vault final for a very dangerous performance. Will FIG’s proposed changes fix the problem?

I’m not so sure. 😦

Vault: Biles, Paseka, Steingrueber

Yet another Olympic Gold medal for Simone Biles. Well deserved.

1. Simone Biles 🇺🇸 15,966
2. Maria Paseka 🇷🇺 15,253
3. Giulia Steingruber 🇨🇭 15,216

4. Karmakar 15.066
5. Wang 14.999
6. Hong 14.9
7. Chusovitina 14.833
8. Olsen 14.816

Clearly FIG rules reward difficulty too much relative to execution. There’s too much incentive to chuck double fronts and Yurchenko triple twist despite a very low chance of landing safely. I’m embarrassed for FIG WTC. The E-score judges are ranking, not judging. Ranking in a very small range.

did Ellie Downie suffer a concussion?

It’s difficult to tell.

If it were not the Olympics, she would have stopped. As a sensible precaution.

The Olympic and British medical teams should use this case study for future consideration.

17-year-old British gymnast Ellie Downie courageous, but should she have been allowed to return?

Here’s the VIDEO if you want to watch it.

Hero De Janeiro – Andreas Toba

Magnetic imaging of his knee showed a tear in his front cruciate ligament as well as meniscus damage in the knee, the German Olympic Sports Federation said.

Toba will have to be operated on and will fly back to Germany once he is no longer in pain, gymnastics team official Sven Karg said.

The gymnast ruptured the cruciate ligament during the floor exercise but astonishingly still competed on the pommel horse afterwards …

Fabian Hambüchen feels FIG rules are pushing too much difficulty. I agree. Especially on Vault.

terrible injury to Samir Aït-Saïd

I don’t want to watch the video. 😦

Samir

USA Today

It was a compound fracture of his tibia/fibula. He will have surgery in Rio.

Recall Samir missed the 2012 Olympic Games because of a knee injury on Dragulescu at the European championships in Monptellier.

There’s too much incentive to throw dangerous vaults in both MAG & WAG. I blame FIG rules. 😦

Fabian Hambüchen spoke out to the media on this point after his teammate Toba was injured.

coach Daniel Jacob Erb in prison

Daniel Jacob Erb, 33, of Hatboro, was arraigned Friday on 48 counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child and related offenses, court records show. …

Erb most recently worked at Tumble Kids Gymnastics in Wyndmoor, court documents showed. He also spent time at the Newtown Athletic Club at their summer camp, according to a letter posted online. The letter said Erb spent a decade working in the York area before moving into southeastern Pennsylvania. …

NBC Philadelphia

keeping gymnasts safe

The front page headline where I’m at was the Indianapolis Star investigation on how USA Gymnastics handles allegations of sexual misconduct.

If you want to follow-up on this discussion I recommend GymCastic episode 210.

“IndyStar tracked down four cases in which USA Gymnastics was warned of suspected abuse by coaches but did not initiate a report to authorities. Those coaches went on, according to police and court records, to abuse at least 14 underage gymnasts after the warnings.”

GymCastic and our twitter account @GymCoaching are the only two sites I know of consistently linking to stories of coaches accused of abuse.

It’s an important issue.

That said, let’s put the risk of coaching sexual misconduct in perspective.

I’m far more worried about motor vehicle accidents driving to the Gym than I am of sexual abuse.

I’m far more worried about injuries in the Gym than I am of sexual abuse.

Fact is that female gymnasts are the best protected children in town, on average.

The GymCastic audiocast mentions Larrissa Miller as an example. In 2015, Larrissa revealed that she had been sexually abused by an extended family member from the ages of 5 to 16.

Not a coach.

If you worry about child sexual assault take a close look at friends & family of those kids you feel are vulnerable. Protect your own.

USA Gymnastics could do more to safeguard their members. I agree. This media attention will help.

But it’s far easier for independent watchdog sites to track past offenders. Suspected potential offenders. The best we have so far is GymCastic’s List of Gymnastics Coaches In The News for Alleged Abuse database.

If concerned, you should volunteer to help update that list.

Finally, I believe people are innocent until proven guilty. How many innocent coaches will be accused in aftermath of this news story?

UPDATE – A message from Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics

does USAG do enough to protect kids?

The Indianapolis Star posted a lengthy article detailing numerous cases where the reporters feel the National Sports Governing Body could have done more, sooner.

Timing is lousy since most of the world is distracted by something happening in Rio right now. This is an important issue. Better would be to have posted a week ago. Or right after the Olympics.

Publishing now does smack of Olympic opportunism.
