HPTC Gymnastics Camp, Idaho

Another terrific year at Camp. I’ve attended most since it launched in Couer d’Alene. This was as good as any in the past.

Olympic Gold medalist Daniela Silivas was once again our headliner.

Many in Gymnastics sports get asked: “Are you Going to the Olympics?”

Here’s how some Canadian athletes at different levels answered that tough question. Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

Kohei is happy

🙂

He’ll be at ease during the AA final. No pressure.

Our defending Olympic Champion is still the man to beat.

Men’s Gymnastics Team Final

Most are predicting Japan & China top 2. Could go either way. But after falling on H Bar in prelims, something tells me this guy is going to be fired up. The team gold is his highest priority in Rio.

Kohei

Kohei is doing all 6 in the team competition. Oleg only PH and PB for Ukraine, saving himself for the Men’s AA battle on Wednesday. Smart. He has a very good chance to upset the King.

Format changes from prelims. Today it’s 5-3-3.

5 gymnasts per team, 3 compete and the 3 scores count.

Start list.

Samir Aït Saïd will be back

French gymnast Samir Aït Saïd has thanked his supporters and vowed to come back following the horrific injury he sustained on vault Saturday during the qualification at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

“I’ll come back stronger at the Tokyo Olympics to win Olympic gold,” he said Saturday evening from the hospital in Rio, where he is due to undergo surgery. “I also want to thank my teammates and all the staff and fans for their support.”

Toba’s heroic Olympic performance

On Floor exercise Andreas Toba, the lead off gymnast, injured his knee on his first tumbling pass.

“I knew immediately that something was wrong,” he said. “I cried like a little kid. I had hopes to make the All-around final here, but it was not to be.”

Teammate Marcel Nguyen empathised: “It really broke my heart,” he said. “I know how hard he has been fighting for this competition. He wanted to fulfil his dream here, competing and qualify for the All-around final. And then this happens.”

Andreas Toba was unable to finish his earlier floor routine after badly injuring his knee in qualifications. But not wanting to let down Team Germany, he fought through the pain to compete on pommel horse.

If he’d not competed Germany would not have qualified to the Team final. Respect.

As it turned out they would have finished top 8 without that routine. But Toba did not know that at the time.

Why I Hate the F Word

Miss Val:

This past year the UCLA Gymnastics team set a goal to win the National Championship. We finished 5th.

It doesn’t equate to failure. It means we didn’t perform well enough to earn enough points to take first place.

Facts: We finished higher than we’d been ranked all year. We hit 48 for 48 routines at the NCAA championships. We stuck more landings in those two meets than we did all season. We reached the pinnacle of Coach Wooden’s pyramid of Success – Competitive Greatness: “to be able to be your best when your best is needed.” …

Nick Ruddock:

How do you want your athletes to remember their training in years to come?

How do you want them to remember the time you spent with them?

Would they have positive memories, or negative thoughts?

Are you suppressing character or allowing it to flourish?

Are you facilitating creativity or restricting it?

Do your athletes regularly laugh and smile whilst training?

Are you having fun whilst you coach?

Do you enjoy the time spent with your athletes?

Do they regularly laugh and smile whilst training?

Most importantly, does the thought of spending another ten years in your current conditions and environment scare you or excite you?

Food for thought as always …
