Rosie MacLennan repeats as Olympic Champion

Wow. I’m so thrilled for Rosie. 🙂

In the notoriously unpredictable sport of trampoline–just one bad bounce can send a world-class athlete into last place–it’s much easier to fly into the top ranks of the sport than to stay there. Rosannagh, or Rosie, MacLennan of Canada proved it wasn’t impossible, however, when she became the first trampoline athlete to win two golds at an Olympics. …

Finishing third was Li Dan of China, the 2015 world champion. In fourth place was He, the gold medalist in Beijing and bronze medalist in London.

Chinese athletes have a streak of winning medals in women’s gymnastics going back to 2004.

Olympics brings religions together

Update – Several commenters have noted that Aliya’s father is of Tatar descent, where many are Muslim. But that Aliya has not declared her personal religious beliefs. The team in the past has visited the Russian Orthodox church before competitions.

Awe-inspiring performances in a close match-up between American gymnasts Simone Biles and Aly Raisman, and Russian Aliya Mustafina, are a cross-section of faith, race and nationality …

Her best AA score in international competition. Talk about peaking for the Olympics. 🙂

5th all-around. Canada’s best ever AA Olympic finish. I’m celebrating tonight. 🇨🇦 🍺

cheering Bela and Ellie in the AA

Ellie Black and Isabela Onyshko will compete the all-around in Rio. Good luck! 🙂

Brittany Rogers:

“Obviously the results of these Games weren’t what we all wanted,” Rogers said about Canada’s near miss on the team finals. “It definitely lit a fire in me to continue on with elite gymnastics.”

In the near future, Rogers will return to Athens at the end of August and finish up her degree. …

Looking further away, Rogers has a plan for wrapping her gymnastics career.

“I’m not sure what competitions I will be assigned to from the Canadian team as those will be discussed after the Games are over,” Rogers said. “I plan to continue training and help out with the team in Georgia any way I can and be ready for whatever competitions I get assigned to by Gymnastics Canada. My goal is to be able to compete in the World Championships in Montreal in 2017 and perhaps retire on home soil.”

Oleg v Kohei

I’ve not yet had a chance to go back and analyze all 12 routines from the AA Olympic final. Many others have and most feel the ranking was correct.

Gennady Sartinskiy (Oleg’s coach) feels the judging and end result were fair.

Verniaiev Uchimura

Kohei:

Uchimura trailed Oleg Verniaiev of Ukraine by 0.901 points heading into the final apparatus — the high bar — but the six-time world champion kept his nerve while Verniaiev stumbled to hand Uchimura the gold with a score of 92.365. …

“I knew it would come down to the high bar. My performance was good, so if I had lost I wouldn’t have had any regrets. …

Uchimura successfully defends all-around title

It was an Olympic AA we’ll never forget. Quite possibly the best ever in Men’s Gymnastics.

Uchimura will be 31 when Tokyo hosts the 2020 Olympics. He’ll try to continue through that meet, perhaps as a specialist.

NBC started Men’s gymnastics at 11:37 p.m. The gold medal was decided at 12:19 a.m. If you missed it, here’s the FIG write up – Long live the ‘King’: Kohei Uchimura continues reign with second Olympic All-around gold
