Qualification system for Worlds 2022

Some details are yet to be announced.

The biggest change so far is a return to team size of 5 gymnasts.

… The new format will come into force at the 2022 and 2023 Worlds, which will limit the number of participants to 208 in the Men’s competition and 201 in the Women’s.

This will allow a reduction in the overall duration of the World Championships to 11 days, compared to 15 at the 2018 event, with two training days and two competition days less.

No doubt this new system will have problems, as well. GymCastic has already identified some.

The podcast reviews two other recent issues:

  • Terin Humphrey posting and defending a dumb, wrong meme on Facebook. Terin was was a member of the selection committee that chose women’s teams for the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.
  • Mary Lou Retton‘s recent TV appearance. Recall that Mary Lou lobbied against  Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act as a USAG Board Member. Happily it was signed into law February 14, 2018. Mary Lou seems still in denial that children were abused.

In addition was new CEO Li Li Leung’s wrong statement that gymnasts who saw the criminal doctor with their coach were safe. Leung did later apologize.

R.I.P. Carol Johnston

One of the gymnasts that inspired me most in my life, Carol Johnston, died of complications from Early On-set Alzheimers. We trained together as kids at Altadore Gymnastics.

“It is with a heavy heart that I let all of you know that Carol Johnston-Koniar [“Lefty”] passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2019 ….

Carol and I were teammates and roommates at Cal State Fullerton and remained lifelong friends. Her husband called me Saturday and asked that I inform the gymnastics community. He is grateful that she is no longer suffering.” 😥

My wife Carol Johnston Koniar was born with one arm in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. …

Her parents encouraged her to not let her one arm be a handicap. Carol grew up enjoying both ice skating and gymnastics.

Carol … received a scholarship to Cal State Fullerton.

In 1979, Disney produced a documentary short on Carol entitled The Truly Exceptional: Carol Johnston.

The documentary was turned into a feature film Lefty, which premiered across the nation as part of Disney’s Wonderful World series.

FIG Beam landing mats

FIG allows the COLUSSI-PELAEZ dismount. Yet doesn’t allow Nush sufficient matting  to do that dismount safely.

Canadian coach education clinicians needed

This post is for members of Gymnastics Canada.

Alberta is hosting a training session for experienced and certified coaches who want to teach the Gymnastics Canada COMPETITION 1 coaching course. That’s a 4 day course for beginner competitive including both apparatus and theory content.

The training days are June 8 & 9, 2019 in Calgary.

June 10 – 13 is a C1 course where new clinicians could teach some sections.
