GBR Olympic sports funding

Great Britain had an excellent Olympics. Still benefiting from 2012 investments. In fact they finished ahead of China in the medal table.

Rowing was funded double that of Gymnastics. A good investment?

Ahead By A Century – Rio Olympics

My favourite Canadian Rio montage.

Watch it on Facebook.

The song is “Ahead By A Century” by The Tragically Hip, a quintessential Canadian band. Nine of their albums have reached #1 in Canada.

Lead singer Gord Downie has been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Their last concert MIGHT have been August 20, 2016th. Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau attended.

Canmore Gymnastics Camp

August 14-20, 2016

The 1st annual resident camp for girls was a big success. Food, accommodation, training and special events all included.

Canmore Camp

I was lead coach on Bars. Highlights included two new kips, low to high releases, high to low releases and work on dismounts. Unlike every other Camp in existence, we had zero bleeding rips over 6 continuous days. 🙂 Many drills were assigned that did not require swinging on an actual Bar.

Canmore, Alberta is an outdoor adventure sport mecca in the Rockies. The girls had instruction in one or two action sports every day.

Olympic Gold prize money

The athlete walking away from Rio with the biggest paycheck for a single gold medal doesn’t even come from an official country.
Taiwanese woman weightlifter Hsu Shu-ching, who competed under the banner of Chinese-Taipei, is being rewarded with $952,000 by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education and the island’s Olympic Committee. …

France, South Korea, Japan, China and the United States also reward medalists with money — but on a much smaller scale. China offers about $36,000 for a gold medal win, while the United States Olympic Committee rewards gold medalists with $25,000. …

Houry Gebeshian’s Best Meet Ever

Read an excellent interview on one of the feel good stories from Rio. 🙂

LH:

When and how did you decide to kiss the apparatuses after you finished competing on each? What’s the story behind this?

HG:

No story. I was not planning on doing it at all. Absolutely not. It came about because I finished my bar routine, I stuck my landing, I hit my newly invented skill pretty well…it was the best routine I could do and once I stuck my landing, I was like, that was awesome. If I could’ve let out one of those hawk screams like the boys do, I totally would have. I was so excited and it was like my way of saying thank you and being like yes, I did it. This is awesome. I hugged the bars and gave them a kiss, and then I ran off the podium

LH:

What’s next for you beyond this stage in your life? I know you have a lot going on with work and planning a wedding, but is there any way you’ll be able to stay involved with gymnastics?

HG:

I definitely want to stay involved. Especially with the Armenian federation. My whole goal with promoting myself and my journey was to get more publicity and more support to build an Armenian women’s gymnastics team. I really wanted to help get the resources needed to do that, so I’m hoping to be a mentor or coordinator for the future of an Armenian women’s program. …
