Do you allow one-on-one private lessons at your Gym?

Better would be two or more gymnasts with one coach for a private. In a Gym with many other adults.

why USAG needs independent oversight

UPDATED with input from Goldie.

The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) is the National Olympic Committee for the United States. It’s based out of Colorado Springs.

USOC is the organization recognized by the the International Olympic Committee.

Similarly, USA Gymnastics ( USAG) answers to the USOC.

USOC could decertify USA Gymnastics and indeed they made that threat. As a result the entire board resigned on January 26, 2018

All those organizations are natural monopolies , not much subject to market forces.

You can quit USAG and go to the United States Association of Independent Gymnastics Clubs, but getting to the NCAA will be more difficult. Olympic qualification impossible.

The U.S. Olympic Monopoly Needs Accountability

There can be only one Team USA, so Congress must provide oversight and force changes.

Safe Sport appeals?

Can a coach appeal a Safe Sport accusation?

I’m not sure.

It’s a concern of U.S. Elite Coaches Association members.

Nassar’s boss arrested

A Michigan State University dean who was Larry Nassar’s boss is accused of groping and propositioning medical students and collecting nude pictures of them on his work computer.

William Strampel, who was arrested Monday, is charged with fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, a high misdemeanor; felony official misconduct; two counts of willful neglect of duty, according to the special prosecutor running a wide-ranging investigation of MSU.

“Strampel used his office to harass, discriminate, demean, sexually proposition and sexually assault female students in violation of his statutory duty as a public office,” prosecutor Bill Forsyth said at a news conference, reading aloud from the criminal complaint. …

training in leotards optional at IGC

Update from International Gymnastics Camp:

… the current recommendation that campers wear either shorts or leggings with leotards at training sessions is in keeping with IGC’s proactive mission to provide the safest possible training environment for its campers. Contrary to some social media allegations, this recommendation is not intended to somehow victimize or victim shame. Rather this practice insures a greater measure of comfort for many gymnasts.

Thank you for a lot of positive support and vocal negative feedback. We are softening our original policy from a requirement to a recommendation as we want all campers and parents to be comfortable and to ensure the wellbeing for all the gymnasts. …

original post from yesterday:

International Gymnastics Camp’s concern with the current issues facing USA Gymnastics drives us to take a pro-active approach to ensure gymnastics is a safe sport when it comes to abuse.

International Gymnastics Camp is advocating that, across the entire nation, shorts or leggings be worn with leotards during both workouts and junior competitions in the women’s programs. In that regard, and to accelerate this trend for change, IGC is requiring our female campers to wear shorts or leggings during workouts at camp.

Thank you for your cooperation.

IGC Camp packing list

This is similar to those Gyms who require boys and men not to train shirtless.

Though I love freedom, and prefer it be optional, I can live with this restriction. Especially at Camp.

Another good option is training in unitards.

Update – Aly Raisman feels any ban of leotards from gymnastics to prevent abuse is a form of ‘victim shaming’. There are many reasons for training dress codes in Gyms. Preventing possible abuse has never been one of them in any Gym I can recall.

Nick Ruddock interview

Amanda Turner:

Ruddock served as junior national coach for the British women’s team from 2010-14. In the team competition at the Junior European championships, the British women rose from fifth in 2010, to fourth in 2012 and then to second in 2014, placing behind gold medalist Russia and ahead of Romania. The team also won five more individual medals that year in historic success: the all-around bronze and vault gold for Ellie Downie, floor exercise gold for Catherine Lyons, floor silver and vault bronze for Amy Tinkler.

He then spent a year as personal coach to Durham’s Amy Tinkler, the 2015 British national champion who helped Britain win a team bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships and then captured the bronze medal on floor at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

IG: You’ve said that most coaches focus too much on the technical side, instead of what you have called the big picture of “happy/healthy/hungry to learn.” How did this idea come to you?

NR: … Coaches now have access to every single drill and exercise ever used, so these no longer form part of a competitive advantage for people. It’s now the application of this knowledge, the standards and crucially; the delivery of the content that is the “difference that makes the difference.”

Soft skills such as communication, emotional intelligence and relationship management should be at the core of a coach’s skill set, but I don’t know too many coaches who sign up for online courses or workshops in these areas. They’re not as glamorous, but will have a far greater effect on their performance.

NR: … I sought the very best mentors early on in my coaching whom I owe an awful lot to, notably Al Fong and Armine Barutyan-Fong, and Valeri Liukin, who all took me under their wing, and continue to guide me. The Fongs have created a truly remarkable environment, one which I have never seen emulated elsewhere …
