average the middle 3 of 7 judge’s scores

An interesting experiment is planned for European Championships 2017 in Romania.

For the first time we will use the Smart Rings technology in senior competition, after successful tests at the last 2 European Championships.

Another big change will be introduced in the judging. In order to improve the accuracy of the final execution (E) score we will include the scores of the reference judges. So instead of counting the middle score of 5 scores, we will count the middle 3 scores of 7 scores. In addition a judge will be replaced when his/her own country competes on his / her apparatus. This is of course to remove the potential for bias and conflict of interest. To do this, an additional judge will be added, judge E6, whose score will replace the judge of the competing country. …

deciding Baseball balls & strikes

Sooner or later Baseball will use #RobotUmps rather than human beings when deciding whether a pitch was a strike.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

A machine called Hawk-Eye decides whether Tennis serves are in or out.

Trampoline uses both technology and human judges to decide score. I’m looking forward to Artistic Gymnastics doing the same.

triple salto vaults banned in 2020 MAG Code

No triple salto vaults (forward or backward) will be permitted for value in the 2017-2020 Code
of Points.

FIG MTC newsletter Nov 1, 2016

Good decision. Especially in comparison with WTC – still encouraging badly performed and dangerous double salto vaults for women.

Luke Carson was issued a reprimand that will stay on his record for 2 years. But was not suspended. I’d originally wrongly posted that Luke was also suspended. Apologies.

another National Team gymnast sues Larry Nassar

A former member of the United States women’s gymnastics team filed a civil lawsuit Thursday against Dr. Larry Nassar in California Superior Court, claiming the long-time team doctor for USA Gymnastics sexually assaulted her during medical exams and that the legendary former coaches, Bela and Marta Karolyi, failed to protect her and engaged in their own pattern of physical and emotional abuse.

The suit also claims that top USA Gymnastics officials had “wide-ranging knowledge” of the abuse, but for years “concealed and ignored” it, enabling both Nassar and the Karolyi. …

Clearing Up the 2020 Confusion

ASSuming the new FIG Executive and Technical Committees don’t tinker with the qualification system, a real possibility.

Despite the complexity, I much prefer this to what we had for Rio.
