Melanie de Jesus dos Santos – Bars

The best Bars routine at Europeans in my opinion.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

No surprise. Valentina Rodionenko blamed the judges for the fact that Elena Eremina finished 4th AA, Melanie 3rd AA. Elena fell on her Beam mount.

The judges got the ranking correct. The rest of the world is catching up to Russia in women’s Artistic Gymnastics. Especially on Bars.

OUR RUSSIAN SEASON feels that the Russian Men are on the rise (for sure!) while the WAG program has serious problems.

Catlina Ponor – Floor

Cata was (after the competition) deducted for missing the forward tumbling requirement.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

She intended to compete a front layout after the 2 1/2 twist, but didn’t have enough rotation.

Watch her podium training routine (VIDEO) and her old Baku routine (VIDEO) with the same tumbling.

It is embarrassing that the judges didn’t catch it immediately. Romanian Press and fans will be disappointed. But I’ll sleep better knowing that the system worked. They got the score right in the end. Schaefer will compete the Final instead of being wrongly knocked out.

Capps, Nichols, Gnat, McMurtry for Honda

Teammates Chayse Capps and Maggie Nichols from Oklahoma University, Ashleigh Gnat of Louisiana State University and Alex McMurtry from the University of Florida are the four nominees for the Honda Sport Award for Gymnastics …

The nominees were chosen by a panel of coaches representing the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC). …

Those four athletes are incredibly deserving. You might argue that MyKayla Skinner should have been on the list, as well.

MyKayla’s past controversial statements online have not endeared her to voting panels. She sounded very respectful of others at Nationals, however. Hopefully she’s learning at Utah.

U.S. Center for SafeSport

Only three weeks since opening its doors, the U.S. Center for SafeSport is investigating 21 cases involving sexual misconduct or abuse in Olympic sports.

The center’s website offers a hotline and an online reporting form for those who have been victims of abuse or know of such cases. …

The organization operates independently from the U.S. Olympic Committee and organizations governing Olympic sports. The USOC and the 47 national governing bodies help fund the center — about $13.3 million over five years — but do not have any say over how it operates or the cases it investigates.

The center opened March 23 …

New US athlete protection group tells AP of reports of abuse

A step forward, for sure. But how well will SafeSport work?

That’s yet to be seen.

Jim Holt’s letter to the USAG Board

Jim Holt posted An Open Letter to the Gymnastics Community of America on March 31, 2017.

And followed up with a more specific missive to the USAG Board on April 11th:

The Board must go public with an apology.

“USA Gymnastics is profoundly sorry for the pain and suffering the victims of child abuse in our sport have suffered, and deeply apologize for whatever organizational shortcomings have led us to these circumstances. USAG vows that this will be rectified and that never again can this happen on our watch.”

A new CEO must be identified, hired, and installed with all urgent deliberateness. …

USAG needs to identify what it stands for. …

USAG must make a REAL commitment to service, not just corporate blather! …

Europeans – 6 men, 4 women

Yes the format for Europeans and Worlds 2017 results in more men being invited than women. I’d rather FIG find a way to invite the same number of men and women from each nation.
