Shoko Miyata sent home from Olympics

Shoko Miyata, the 19-year-old captain of Japan’s women’s artistic gymnastics for the Paris Olympics, for smoking violation — against their conduct code.

I’m a coach. Teams must have rules that are enforced.

BUT in this case I would have voted for a lesser penalty.

As it turns out, the entire team suffers.

GymCastic Power Rankings – Paris

Crunching the numbers …

  1. Simone Biles
  2. Rebeca Andrade
  3. Suni Lee
  4. Qiu Qiyuan
  5. Manila Esposito
  6. Kaylia Nemour
  7. Mélanie de Jesus dos Santos
  8. Jade Carey
  9. Alice D’Amato
  10. Zhou Yaqin

Of course only TWO can qualify for the AA Final from each nation.

If there is a surprise podium medal — I’m guessing it would be Kaylia or Manila.

Of course it’s probably a mistake to underestimate Mélanie in her home nation.
