Scores are high in the USA for some guys, some apparatus. Selectors will need to redo the math with more realistic international numbers. Perhaps the WAY over-scored NCAA judging is part of the cause.

Kenzo Shirai will make his first Olympic journey this summer to Rio de Janeiro as he secured his place along with Yusuke Tanaka and Koji Yamamuro on Sunday following the national apparatus championships, which serve as Japan’s final qualifying event. …

Performances from the national championships in April and the NHK Cup in May were also taken into account by the Japan Gymnastics Association to choose the best possible members for the team event. …

Shirai locks up place on Olympic gymnastics team

Morgan, Payne, and Cournoyer short-listed for Canadian Olympic Team after last day of the 2016 Global News Canadian Championships in Artistic & Trampoline Gymnastics.

… Gymnastics Canada won’t name the one male gymnast who will head to Rio until later this month at the Canadian Trials, so it becomes a waiting game for Payne and the rest of Canada’s elite.

“My shot’s still there… but I still have some work to do if I want to be that guy,” said Payne.”

Most feel Scott Morgan is the favourite. A Worlds Floor finalist in 2013.

Canada was in the same situation 4 years ago. In the end Nathan Gafuik was named the London Olympian.

A very strong finals competition. Congratulations to all the Seniors who competed in the Olympic trial.

Isabela’s 15.10 Beam was one of the very best Beam routines I’ve seen over the past several years. (Canadian judges have never been accused of over-scoring at home.)

Most consider Bela and Ellie locks. The Olympic team will be built around them.

Like other nations with depth, there are multiple scenarios with resulting team scores very close together.

Therefore the most consistent gymnasts are most likely to get the call. Especially the lead off Beam and Bar routines in qualifications.

I understand 12 gymnasts will be invited to the final trial in Quebec end of the month. And I’m happy I’m not a selector. 🙂

The 2016 Men’s P&G Gymnastics Championships begin on Friday in Hartford, Connecticut, and will feature a field of 11 men who have combined for 39 U.S. titles and 12 world championships medals.

The competition will determine both the men’s senior national champions and national team, as well as the athletes who will advance to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials on June 23-25 in St. Louis. From there, five men will be chosen to represent Team USA at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games.

My longshot picks to make it to Rio are Akash Modi, Yul Moldauer, or Sean Melton. …
