Wendy Bruce’s coach Kevin Brown

1992 Olympian Wendy Bruce trained at Brown’s Gymnastics under Kevin and Rita Brown.

Wendy:

I ran down the podium stairs, I ran past Steve, I ran past Bela, I ran past my team, I ran all the way to the end of the arena and right into the arms of MY coach.

All the years of training, all the tears, all the anxiety and emotion, all the uncertainty, and all of the work was all worth it. Everything Mr. Brown had worked for in his life had finally been accomplished. It was all over and it all went our way. For the first time in a long time everything worked out. I hit all of my routines. I had the best competition of my life and it was in the Olympics. We both couldn’t have asked for more. …

Gymnastics “private lessons”

In general I’m not a fan of privates.

Scheduled group training should be enough to meet the individual goals.

But I have to admit — privates work. When parents & kids are motivated to add an expensive additional lesson to the regular training week, they often succeed.

Chalk Bucket has a thread on the pros and cons of privates.

An alternative is to offer an additional workout for ALL gymnasts in a given group. Those who want extra can sign-up as desired.

Kristen Maloney’s story

Kids in the Gym know the name.

Most elite compete the “Maloney” on Bars.

Former Olympian Kristen Maloney underwent eight surgeries while competing as a gymnast in the 1990s. She recounts the damage her body has sustained and how, at 36, she still has few regrets.

I have a newborn son, and I think about whether I would want him to train for the Olympics. If it was what he really wanted — and not just because it was just something he thinks he should do, or something he’s good at — I’d say yes. It’s all worth it. …
