Apparatus Finals Results … and Simone

First, Simone went 16/16. She’s never been better.

A year ago she was not happy. Here’s how she’s feeling today.

Beam
1. Biles Simone USA USA 15.066 = 8.666 + 6.400
2. Liu Tingting CHN 14.433 = 8.233 + 6.200
3. Li Shijia CHN CHN 14.300 = 8.300 + 6.100 | Pen. : -0.1 overtime

Kara Eaker was 4th with a good routine. She’s fantastic, but may need to change it up to rely less on Ring leaps and connections for difficulty.

Floor

Flavia or Melanie were close. I’d not been upset if either had been Bronze.

My favourite routine was Brooklyn Moors. Best she’d done all week. Added a jump to her Podkopayeva.  Landing deductions on the last pass were the biggest problem.

38-year-old Marian DRAGULESCU looked like a kid, sticking his eponymous vault.

Dom CUNNINGHAM had the best form / control overall. Did not do his Yurchenko triple twist this time.

I’m just happy there were no serious injuries.

P Bars
1. Fraser Joe GBR 15.000 = 8.400 + 6.600
2. Onder Ahmet TUR 14.983 = 8.783 + 6.200
3. Kaya Kazuma JPN 14.966 = 8.666 + 6.300

It was a virtual tie for the next two. Personally I had Ferhat for a medal.

5. Arican Ferhat TUR 4.900 = 8.400 + 6.500

H Bar
1. Mariano Arthur BRA 14.900 = 8.600 + 6.300
2. Srbic Tin CRO 14.666 = 8.466 + 6.200
3. Dalaloyan Artur RUS 14.533 = 8.433 + 6.100

Tin up first. Set the Bar high with his short, difficult to deduct routine.

Tang Chia-Hung does the best and highest Hecht skills, but came off close to the end of the set. He had qualified #1. Cheer him in the Olympics as Taiwan qualified a full team.

Sam went for the HARD routine. Good decision, I think. But he had deducations. Hashimoto Daiki has the best form – Uchimura good.

Also … Ellie Black withdrew from Beam and Kara Eaker got the spot. Heart this.

Carlos (Caloy) Yulo – World Floor Champ

With Kenzo not in Stuttgart, Yulo did the most twists.

It was a very strong Floor final. The young man from Philippines was best of the best today. He’s currently training and studying in Japan.

World Apparatus Finals – day 1

FANTASTIC Final. Medals from superpower Gymnastics nations including Belgium, Taiwan, Philippines, Israel, and Ireland.

Vault
1. Biles Simone USA 15.399
2. Carey Jade USA 14.883
3. Downie Ellie GBR 14.816

I thought Jade slightly better than Ellie, but it was close.

Shallon 4th. Qi Qi 5th.

Bars
1. Derwael Nina BEL BEL 15.233 = 8.733 + 6.500
2. Downie Becky GBR 15.000 8.500 + 6.500
3. Lee Sunisa USA 14.800 = 8.400 + 6.400

Most people will be content with this podium. I’m thrilled.

Floor
1. Yulo (Caloy) Carlos PHI 15.300 = 8.800 + 6.500
2. Dolgopyat Artem ISR 15.200 = 8.800 + 6.400
3. Xiao Ruoteng CHN 14.933 = 8.733 + 6.200

No controversy. Xiao had one poor landing and the lower D-score. Yulo and Artem were close. Amplitude of Yolo’s tumbling superior. I felt judges got the ranking right.

Artem wins Olympic qualification with this medal.

Yulo should be a national hero, of course.

Pommels
1. Whitlock Max GBR 15.500 = 8.500 + 7.000
2. Lee Chih Kai TPE 15.433 = 8.933 + 6.500
3. McClenaghan Rhys IRL 15.400 = 9.000 + 6.400

Zou Jingyuan only 6.300. And had some leg brushes. Doesn’t swing as well as Rhys in my opinion. Some feel Max’s E-score is high since he took a 0.3 deduction on the first handstand.

Rings
1. Colak Ibrahim TUR 14.933 = 8.733 + 6.200
2. Lodadio Marco ITA 14.900 = 8.600 + 6.300
3. Ait Said Samir FRA 14.800 = 8.600 + 6.200

Sadly, the Olympic Champ and one of the greatest all-time, Petrounias Eleftherios from Greece, has not yet qualified to Tokyo. He was 4th with 14.733 = 8.433 + 6.300. But he still has a chance to qualify through the World Cup route, as can Epke Zonderland who’s in the same situation.

Recall Samir is the guy who broke his legs during Vault qualification at Rio. Vowed to come back. And did it. Legend.

wrapping up Men’s AA

One of the most exciting all-around competitions ever.

Though it didn’t show, Nikita said he was very tired this many days into the competition. The loud and enthusiastic crowd helped.

On Russian dominance in Stuttgart, he said: – “A new era … Get used to it.”

Xiao Ruoteng was about 0.5 behind arriving at the last apparatus, so decided to try his harder H Bar to make it up. He fell.

Oleg Verniaiev rated his health at 5-6 / 10, but better than Worlds last year. Decided to go for broke. Did his highest difficulty routines, and it worked.
