Chinese teams training in Canada

MAG and WAG teams from China competed at the University of Calgary International Cup competition. And trained for a week at the new Pine Valley Gym Centre residence Camp north of Edmonton, Alberta.

The elite FIG women from China competed Level 10 rules in Calgary. Their level of difficulty was a bit of a shock to the Canadian level 10 girls and their parents. 🙂

John Orozco retires

One of my favourite gymnasts.

After making the 2016 Olympic team in June, he landed a high bar dismount in July that tore the ACL in his left knee and shredded his dream of a second trip to the Olympics. …

Orozco, 24, has retired from gymnastics and is leaving the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, where he has trained for the last seven years. …

Orozco did reveal that his future plans will involve music, so relocation is a necessity.

mental blocks in Gymnastics

A big frustration for coaches. Even bigger for the gymnast afflicted.

Mental blocks are far more common for female athletes than male. They are most often on backwards skills. And somewhat more frequent during stressful times of the competitive season.

Every coach tries to prevent mental blocks from developing. Be particularly cautious when training backwards skills. (More matting, more progressions, more repetition.)

Some coaches have fewer mental blocks than others.

We’re learning. I believe there are fewer mental blocks in 2017 than in the past.
