3D video to determine difficulty scores

The most exciting story out of the 2016 FIG Congress was Fujitsu’s video analysis software that can (finally) determine what skills were performed by a gymnast.

… the FIG Executive Committee is very interested by this idea that would allow the reduction of the number of judges needed for competition. …

Exclusive: Departing FIG President Grandi hails 3D judging technology as “great chance” for his sport

The faster this technology can be introduced, the better.

Grandi departs the FIG

… Bruno Grandi will step down as President of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) this week at the age of 82 and shift the burden onto the shoulders of either the European Union of Gymnastics President Georges Guelzec or the secretary general of the Japanese Gymnastics Association, Morinari Watanabe, who both seek election at the 81st FIG Congress in Tokyo from October 18. …

… when asked what aspects of his 20 years as FIG President had given him most cause for satisfaction, Grandi responded with the big picture.

“Globally I can note a very positive evolution because the number of member countries has increased from around 90 to 144 in 20 years,” he said. …

“The medals were shared between 16 nations in Rio,” he said. …

“A British gymnast was crowned for the first time Olympic champion, even twice on the same day. And who could have imagined that a Dutch gymnast would be the queen on the balance beam? We can see a very positive evolution in the number of countries represented on the podium. …

Inside the Games – Grandi, departing grandee of world gymnastics, offers his final judgements

Grandi

Most interesting to me of Grandi’s comments:

“The evaluation system is the biggest challenge in a sport like ours,” he said. “Last year in Tokyo, we have seen the results of studies regarding a 3D replay system able to automatically deliver difficulty scores. These researches are led by the Fujitsu Company and the FIG Executive Committee is very interested by this idea that would allow us to reduce the number of judges needed for competition. …

Louis Smith reveals extremists sent him death threats over drunken Muslim-mocking video but insists he’s not racist

A commenter points out that racism is not the correct term. More accurate: religious hatred, religious discrimination, religious intolerance.

a Gym Mom writes Louis Smith

Dear Louis

My heart sank when the video appeared online over the weekend. As a proud Brit, as a Muslim, as a parent and as the Mum of a son who is an Elite Level-5 gymnast representing his region next month in the national finals, my heart really did sink. I had to discuss it with him; I wish I hadn’t needed to. …

Protecting Gymnasts From Predators – Part 1

Protecting Gymnasts From Predators – Part 2

Darkness to Light has a great educational resource called “The 5 Steps to Protecting Our Children”;

Step 1: Learn The Facts: Realities, Not Trust, Should Influence Your Decisions Regarding Children

Step 2: Minimize Opportunity: If you eliminate or reduce isolated, one-on-one situations between children and adults, and children and other youth, you’ll dramatically reduce the risk of sexual abuse.

Step 3: Talk About It: Children often keep abuse a secret, but barriers can be broken down by (parents) talking openly about our bodies, sex, and boundaries.

Step 4: Recognize The Signs: Don’t expect obvious signs when a child is being sexually abused. Signs are often there, but you have to know what to look for.

Step 5: React Responsibly: DISCLOSURE of sexual abuse means a child has chosen you as the person he or she trusts enough to tell. It is the moment when children learn whether others can be trusted to stand up for them.

Protecting Gymnasts From Predators – Part 3

One more point. Clubs should not discourage parents from watching practice. The more transparency the better.

Our competitive gymnasts are amongst the best protected children. But we could do even better.

Louis Smith, Luke Carson apologize

Louis Smith accused of ‘mocking’ Islam.

Here’s his apology.

Luke apologized as well but his twitter account is private so I can’t link here.

Personally I’m fed up with Louis. 😦

U.S. Olympic prize money

Olympic athletes who bring home the gold, silver and bronze for Team USA will no longer pay a “victory tax” for their achievement under a bill that President Barack Obama signed into law Friday.

The IRS will now be prohibited from taxing most medals or other prizes awarded to U.S. Olympians.

The U.S. Olympic Committee awards cash prizes to medalists, ranging from $25,000 for gold, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze. The cash prize comes on top of the value of the medals themselves: $600 for gold and $300 for silver; bronze medals aren’t worth much. …

But not all Team USA medalists will be exempt. The tax will still apply to high-profile athletes who earn at least $1 million a year, such as swimmer Michael Phelps.
