USAG buys the Karolyi Ranch Gym

… athlete and coach housing and recreational areas …

… the portion of the Karolyi Ranch that USA Gymnastics is purchasing is 36.2 acres and includes housing for 300 athletes, coaches and administrators; three training gyms, two artistic/acro and one multi-discipline (rhythmic, trampoline/tumbling); a dance studio; dining and recreational areas; medical and rehab facilities; and office space. The training gym for rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline and tumbling was added in 2010.

The Karolyis first began training athletes at the Ranch in 1984. They will retain their personal residences, the Lodge and the remaining acreage. …

The geographic location is poor, of course. Something more central to everyone in the USA would have been better.

The Karolyis are expected to maintain a presence at the ranch, and USA Gymnastics is considering turning an older portion of the main gym — one lined with pictures, medals and trophies from major competitions dating back to the 1980s — into a museum to honor the Karolyi legacy. …

While Penny considers Aug. 24 as Karolyi’s official retirement date, there has been no decision yet on her replacement.

… “I’ve met with the coaches and told them our main goal is to get through Rio and not worry about making it a distraction.” …

Canadian 2020 Training Camp

For many nations the focus is now the Tokyo Olympics.

Yes that Kyna Fletcher over on the right side. Kyna was the WAG National Team Director for Canada’s record breaking 5th place team in London. She’s gone over to the other side to see how they are preparing. 🙂

top 5 AA gymnasts to Rio

Cordelia posted an interesting factoid:

All are aware that the P&G Championships and the US Olympic Team Trials are both qualifying competitions as spelled out in the selection procedures. If you look at the gymnasts AA scores over both competitions this is what you get:

1. Biles 248.25
2. Hernandez 241.65
3. Raisman 240.85
4. Douglas 235.25
5. Kocian 233.5
6. Smith 232.55
7. Skinner 232.1

As it turns out, the Olympic team that was chosen is composed of the top 5 AAers over the two competitions.

Certainly that’s not the only reason the American Olympic team was chosen as it was. They most likely picked top 3 AA … then filled in the best, reliable routines for the team final. I could still see Gabby being replaced if she’s not hitting Bars and Beam very consistently at training camp.

Karolyi Ranch documentary

Somebody posted a copy of the NBC documentary on YouTube.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube. (46min)

Balance Beam Situation posted a very funny recap – AMERICAN HORROR STORY: THE RANCH. 🙂

It originally aired on NBC on June 24th before the first night of the P&G Women’s Championships. For some reason NBC can’t find a way to sell shows like this internationally.

Marta Karolyi and the Ranch get too much credit for the success of the American women’s program. USAG should move training camps around the U.S. Or pick a more accessible location – Colorado Springs, for example.
