Stanford will not cut sports

Great news.

Stanford University has reversed the decision to cut 11 of its varsity sports programs. In an announcement on Tuesday, the school said the school backtracked in part because of “an improved financial picture with increased fundraising potential.”

At the time of the original decision in July of 2020, the university received heavy backlash after it announced the following sports would be discontinued:

  • Men’s and women’s fencing
  • Field hockey
  • Lightweight rowing
  • Men’s rowing
  • Co-ed and women’s sailing
  • Squash
  • Synchronized swimming
  • Men’s volleyball
  • Wrestling

Also factoring into the decision are federal lawsuits from the athletes affected, as well as on-field protests.

Uchimura – H Bar

At NHK he did what is becoming his usual thing on HB, scoring 15.333. This gives him another 40 points towards selection for Japan’s +1 spot.

Yonekura Hidenobu scored a vault average of 15.050, lower than his scores from All Japan but enough to earn him 30 points.

This means that provisionally, both Kohei and Hidenobu have 110 points, so Event Championships will be key to deciding who gets the spot.

Unfortunately Minami Kazuki withdrew from NHK with a calf injury, which I think takes him out of Olympic contention, though hopefully he will return for Event Championships. …

Kiwan Watts won the AA and all apparatus — aside from Luka Sisauri who won Pommels.

JOSH LEVIN from NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY was named Coach of the Year.

Olympians Hashimoto Daiki & Kaya Kazuma

Unlike the host nation WAG team, only 2 Olympians have been named (so far) for the men.

No doubt they will look closely at who best complements the two selected.

… The top 5 is crucial because the selection policies state that the 3rd Olympic team spot must be someone who placed top 5 AA at NHK. Therefore one of Wataru, Teppei or Kazuyuki will definitely be on the Olympic team.

The 4th spot must be someone who placed top 10 at NHK. …
