The new U.S. Center for SafeSport in Denver, Colorado is set to open in January 2017, and now the organization has found its new CEO.

Shellie Pfohl, former Executive Director of President Obama’s Youth Fitness Initiative, has been hired to lead the SafeSport center, whose mission is to promote safe, supportive environments for athletes across all sports. …

Canada wins Olympic Hopes

The team of William Emard (Laval Excellence), Anthony Tawfik (Futures Gymnastics), Ioannis Chronopoulos (Futures Gymnastics), Evgeny Siminiuc (Futures Gymnastics), Jesse Tyndall (Taiso Gymnastics Club), Chris Kaji (Phoenix), and Felix Dolci (Laval Excellence) finished in first place with a final score of 314 ahead of teams from Hungary and France. …

In addition to winning the overall team title, Emard finished in first place in the all-around competition with 78.70 while Chronopoulos won a bronze medal with a score of 78.45. …

The men will compete in the apparatus finals on Saturday while the women kick off competition on Friday with the all-around and team competition.

Aliya Mustafina is married

World and Olympic champion Aliya Mustafina has married bobsledder Alexei Zaitsev, becoming the third member of Russia’s gymnastics team to tie the knot since the Olympic Games in Rio.

“Aliya married Alexei Zaitsev in a wedding held at the groom’s home in Krasnodar,” said her father, 1976 Olympic wrestling bronze medalist Fargat Mustafin, to the TASS agency on Thursday. “I am very happy for my daughter.”

Zaitsev is a hopeful for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. …

Mustafina joins recent newlyweds on the Russian Olympic team Denis Ablyazin, who married long-time girlfriend Ksenia Semyonova in September; and David Belyavsky, who married his girlfriend Maria this past weekend in Greece.

British Olympic Hopes team

The British team have a strong history here taking the last four team, and three AA titles, an achievement the 2016 team will hope to emulate.

The competition is open to second year Espoir, and both junior years, so for 2016 those born 2001-2003. It’s a young British team this year, with two Espoirs, three first year juniors, and just one second year junior selected.

The format is 6-5-4, however the sixth member of the team can be put up on to compete on any apparatus to add to their individual total, and try to qualify for apparatus finals. …

Russia’s Angelina Melnikova and Ukraine’s Oleg Vernyayev won the all-around title Wednesday evening at the 33rd Arthur Gander Memorial in Chiasso, Switzerland.

The Arthur Gander Memorial, which alternates each year between the cities of Chiasso and Morges, attracted 11 Olympians from this summer’s games in Rio de Janeiro. The competition format allowed gymnasts to compete an abbreviated all-around, with the women doing any three events and the men any four. Only the top six gymnasts advanced to the final rotation. …
