new film – The Will to Fly

This looks awesome. 🙂

From a sunburnt country of desert and beaches, known for its swimmers, surfers and cricketers, comes the most unlikely sporting luminary; The Will To Fly is a feature documentary film about the inspirational story of Olympic champion Lydia Lassila, pursuing the ambitions of her tumultuous freestyle aerial skiing career.

Lydia ventures to uphold her Olympic crown as a mother, but more specifically, she seeks to write history by being the first woman to perform the most complex and dangerous manoeuvre of any acrobatic sport; a quadruple twisting, triple somersault on skis. Since missing her opportunity with gymnastics as a young girl, The Will To Fly showcases Lydia’s lifelong quest to fulfil her sporting aspirations.

Lillehammer 2016 Youth Olympic Games

A lot of bests have been seen over the last 11 days here in snowy Norway.

The young Organising Committee has been superb, the volunteers numerous, efficient and helpful, the transport service straightforward, the Wi-Fi flawless. And the sport, while lacking the drama and intensity of an Olympics proper, has been exciting and good to watch, blending the innovative monobob and cross-country cross with older and more established disciplines.

To a far greater extent than at Sochi 2014, and more so than we are likely to see in Pyeongchang 2018 and Beijing 2022, there was fresh and natural snow at every venue, evoking a true winter sporting vibe. Crowds have been good for the most part, with a total attendance of 214,000, while thousands have flocked to the daily concerts and cultural events in Sjogg Park, one of the real successes of these Games. …

So where does this leave the future of the Youth Olympics now four editions have been and gone?

“The Jump is now in its third series and since launch 46 celebrities have taken part successfully. Though it is a new course the events have been designed to be no more difficult than in previous years and all contributors have undertaken a rigorous training programme to prepare them for the show.

” All winter sports carry some element of risk but in light of the number of injuries this year, Channel 4 has asked the producers to review safety procedures again to further reduce the prospect of accident.”
