I can’t believe it.
Kurt ThomasΒ competed forΒ Indiana State University; where he was a five-time NCAA champion, winning the parallel bars and all-around in 1977 and parallel bars, horizontal bar and the all-around in 1979. Thomas helped lead the men’s gymnastics to the 1977 National Championship.
An Olympian in 1976, KurtΒ was the first American male gymnast to win a gold medal inΒ floor exerciseΒ at the 1978 Worlds.
His name lives on as many of us still call Flair Czechkehre Flair a Thomas.
βI am completely devastated to hear thisβ, said Olympic teammateΒ Bart Conner.
βKurt was a fierce rival, who went on to become a cherished friend.
My heart is breaking for his wife Beckie, his children,Β Hunter, Kassidy and KurtΒ as well as the entire gymnastics community, who lost a true pioneer today.β

What I like best about the Great American Gymnastics ExperienceΒ facility in Kansas City, Missouri are the super safe home made mats.
As we return from COVID-19, most Gyms are training with matting on their foam cube pits. These on top and protecting the pit edge at GAGE are ideal. And easy to clean.

For me Dive Roll is a critical SAFETY basic. When something goes wrong, gymnasts need to absorb impact force over time and surface area by rolling out.
The classic example is going over the handle bars when cycling: rolling out is safest, prone fall more dangerous.Β
Male gymnasts all do enough dive rolls.
But it’s a neglected basic for some WAG coaches. If you see a competitive gymnast Β with too much pike on her Handspring Vault, there’s a good chance she hasn’t perfected Dive Roll.
