The sad news was announced on Wednesday that the most successful ever Czech Olympic athlete, Věra Čáslavská, died at the age of 74. She had been battling cancer of the pancreas. The gymnast will be remembered not just for her medals but for her protest against the Soviet bloc invasion of Czechoslovakia at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. …

Aimee Boorman’s new Gym

Aimee Boorman, Biles’ longtime coach, has been hired as executive director of women’s gymnastics and elite coordinator at EVO Athletics in Sarasota, Fla. It means a move from Houston, where Boorman has coached since college.

“My vision for what a gymnastics facility should be is reflected in EVO,” Boorman said …

What Boorman’s move means for Biles is not certain. The 19-year-old hasn’t ruled out a return for the Tokyo Games in 2020, and Boorman has coached the Olympic champion since she began gymnastics. But Biles’ family opened the World Champions Centre in suburban Houston last year. …
