USA Gymnastics Alumni Network

USAG did not have an Alumni program?

That’s surprising.

“As a past member of the national team, I think the Alumni Network is an incredible opportunity to interact and connect not only with gymnasts from my competitive days, but also the many talented athletes who have represented the USA at any point in time,” said David Durante, chair of the Athletes’ Council, athlete director on the USA Gymnastics Board of Directors, and 2008 Olympic Team alternate.

“I think having a specific place where this special group of gymnasts can meet and interact will regenerate the camaraderie and friendship that spans across disciplines and careers. I also hope this will keep our best and brightest engaged and involved in our sport in the years to come.”

To join the conversation and the alumni group, anyone who has been a member of a U.S. Senior National Team can go to Facebook’s USA Gymnastics Alumni Network and request to be a member. …

Asuka inspired by Kohei

… Rio 2016 was definitely her best major competition to date, as she placed eighth in the all-around and fourth in the team final (the best finish for the Japanese women’s team since 1964).

“After the Rio Olympics, I was kind of burned out, physically and mentally,” Asuka recently told us. “But [my passion] came back and now I’m training for the World Championships in Montreal.” …

“I was actually thinking of retiring after Rio,” Asuka admits, “but as I saw Kohei [Uchimura] become the first pro gymnast in Japan, and he is still making progress…I started thinking [that I should do the same]. I started thinking [about bringing] the women’s team up on the stage just like men’s team. So I decided to keep competing until Tokyo 2020.” …

Aimee Boorman interview

The best I’ve read.

What was your favorite way to spend a day as a child?

I was a latchkey kid. Single mom. We lived close by the park district where I started doing gymnastics. Then when I switched to private club gymnastics, I would go home and get ready for gym. I’d eat a snack, get on the public transportation and go to gym. My mom would pick me up after and that’s pretty much what I did every day, because my life was gymnastics …

… (Simone) came in during a field trip. You walked in and you see all these 6-year olds on a field trip. She got a note sent home with her that said, “Hey, do you want to come in and try some classes?” …

As far as Simone goes, she has star quality. She did really ugly gymnastics when she was little, but she was powerful. She was this teeny little thing. People would see how high she would tumble, how dynamic she was, and that she had this smile from ear to ear because she was doing what she loved. It was just fun for her. …

What is the most important word that embodies that relationship?

I think it is trust. We were together for 12 years. It was a long relationship …
