Gymnastics Canada McLaren Report

As promised, McLaren Global Sport Solutions delivered in January.

I’m just starting to read the full report, but here’s a press release summary:

  • “We heard it at every level of the sport: change is urgently needed in gymnastics”
  • report provides GymCan with an implementation plan and structure for change
  • 46 recommendations, each with supporting rationale
  • also includes a Safe Sport Policy Review — a comprehensive analysis of GymCan’s current national Safe Sport policies and procedures, including reporting procedures, case management procedures, codes of conduct and educational requirements.

I was one of those interviewed by McLaren, recommending GymCan start with WAG and Rhythmic as those disciplines have had the most complaints — but implement new policies for all disciplines.

Olivia Dunne asks fans to be respectful

We’re thrilled that a gymnast has the #1 estimated NIL valuation of more than $2.5 million.

But that does attract the fan(atics).

Some at the LSU v Utah meet must have been disappointed Livvy wasn’t in the lineup. And some were a distraction.

Certainly LSU is going to have to improve security at the events she attends.

FIG MAG landing deductions

From FIG MTC Newsletter December 2022.

The Code of Points, Article 9.2.17 states the following:

Landing with feet slightly apart and gymnast lifts heels and joins both heels together without lifting and moving the front of his feet – No deduction

There have always been discussion surrounding what is meant by “slightly”. …

If the feet are more than 10cm apart there will be a 0.1 or 0.3 deduction taken, even if the heels are brought together after the initial landing. (Article 9.4)

Low Landings

The MTC has also become concerned for the safety of the gymnasts with exceptionally low landing positions on all apparatus. A low landing is defined as the hips below the knees, which should be deducted 0.5 for technical error. (Article 9.4, Other Technical Errors)

In the example below the gymnasts’ hips are below the knees, 0.5 deduction.

I’m surprised USA Gymnastics would choose to host events in States with such controversial interpretations of the recent Supreme Court ruling. I see this as a red flag. USAG doesn’t care.
