R.I.P. Art Shurlock

The legendary UCLA coach, born 1937, has gone to the Hall of Fame in the sky.

When I was a young coach, Art invited us CANADIANS to train at UCLA between Christmas and New Years. Inspiring.

I particularly remember holiday training 1983 — just before the L.A. Olympics which were hosted at Pauley Pavilion in 1984.

Shurlock coached the U.S. in the 1984 Olympics as well as the World University Games Teams in 1987 and 1993. Shurlock was twice named NCAA Coach of the Year in 1984 and 1987.

Rest In peace.

Art competed at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games finishing 10th on Pommels.

Spartakiade Moscow?

The Spartakiad (or Spartakiade) was an international sports event that was sponsored by the Soviet Union.

Five international Spartakiades were held from 1928 to 1937.

Later Spartakiads were organized as national sport events of the Eastern Bloc countries. …

As Russian athletes are unable to compete in many major international competitions, this will be Putin’s alternative Olympics.

Janja Garnbret became the first ever female Olympic gold medalist in sport climbing, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest competitive climbers of all time. She is also the world’s first-ever female climber to onsight an 8c (5.14b) graded sport climbing route.

The Olympic title was decided on combined results of 3 quite different disciplines.

As the host nation, France is allocated a number of guaranteed places, which will be awarded to other countries if French athletes fill this quota through the qualifying process. There are also a few universality places reserved for gymnasts from under-represented countries, which will be selected by a tripartite commission for the Olympic movement a few months before the start of the Games.

NOTE – These new Technical Regulations eliminate about 100 individual participants for 2022 and 2023 compared with last cycle.
