ZANETTI v PETROUNIAS

Defending Olympic Champion v defending World Champion. Who takes the Gold?

I’m glad I wasn’t judging this one.

1 ZANETTI Arthur BRA 6.800 + 9.066 = 15.866
2 PETROUNIAS Eleftherios GRE 6.800 + 9.033 = 15.833

Dipa wins Vault

A National hero to 1.3 billion people back home. 🙂

1 KARMAKAR Dipa IND 14.833
2 CHUSOVITINA Oksana UZB 14.716
3 LITTLE Emily AUS 14.383

Dipa’s Handspring double front was better than in the prelims. Definitely not a zero vault.

Under current FIG rules I’d say the ranking of the top 3 was fair. WTC did not address how to more severely evaluate dangerous deep landings. They should. There is too much incentive to “chuck” the Prudnova.

That said, Dipa is great on this apparatus. Her 2nd Kasamatsu (like Tsuk double twist) was one of the best vaults at Test Meet.

Dipa will inspire many tens of thousands of kids to try the sport.

Romania had a poor qualification

Australia 218.428
Romania 216.569

6 teams left to compete all trying for the final 4 Olympic team placements.

It’s difficult to imagine an Olympics without Romania in the team competition. But that’s the way it looks at this point. 😦

Last night the Romanian men failed despite an excellent team performance. What if neither team qualifies?

Ponor leads both Floor and Beam after the first of 4 qualifying rounds. But fell on Vault.

Disciplined, tough and focused, Australia did a good job. But counted a fall on Beam. They must wait on the next 3 sessions to see if they are returning to Rio with a full team.
