Penn State coach Jeff Thompson is out

Assistant coaches Kera Molinaro and Josh Nilson will serve as interim co-head coaches for the remainder of the season. A national search for a new head coach will begin immediately

Consistent with University policy, this is a personnel matter and Intercollegiate Athletics will not have any further comment.

Superb execution. But I don’t like such an imbalance of front tumbling over back tumbling.

8 Canadians in Men’s NCAA

The most in many years, I believe.

Stick it Media has a rundown – Canada’s Big Impact on NCAA Men’s Gymnastics

  • Sam Zakutney (Penn)
  • Corey Paterson (Iowa)
  • Aaron Mah (Cal)
  • Justin Karstadt (Minnesota)
  • Joel Gagnon (Minnesota)
  • Wyatt Tyndall (Penn)
  • Sam Ito (Oklahoma)
  • Jake Bonnay (Nebraska)

The former Canadian Men’s National Coach Edouard Iarov was very negative about College Gymnastics. He preferred gymnasts stay home training with their clubs.

The new National Team Director Tony Smith is much more encouraging of the guys taking advantage of College training in the States. They are welcomed back to attend national team training camps & qualifiers.

In fact, Canada has a team headed to compete at Stanford this weekend — the International Collegiate Challenge (Stanford, Minnesota, Japan, Canada).

I’m hoping scores for Justin Karstadt & Joel Gagnon will count for both teams. 🙂

Boise killing it

Lauren Green:

Boise State may have climbed to its highest ranking in program history last week, but it isn’t something that the Broncos are focused on. Head coaches Neil Resnick and Tina Bird have instilled a mentality that is progress-driven rather than outcome-driven. …

“Beam is such a key to a team,” Bird said. “If you’ve got a good beam score, it’s easier to have a good team score obviously. These guys did a lot of beam this summer. I think it’s the most beam I’ve ever had a team do in the summertime. I think that really is instrumental in putting us in the position we’re in now.” …

The Broncos have not had to count a fall on balance beam all season.

The real strength for BSU has been the uneven bars. Senior Diana Mejia has been a key piece for the Broncos on the event, contributing a 9.900 or better four times this season. …

U.S. Men’s National Team selection?

There are a few issues. I hadn’t thought about this one … until now.

Kensley Behel poses a good question. Leave a comment if you know the answer.

… What is slightly more unclear is how some of the national team members were chosen, as both Anthony McCallum and Emyre Cole of the University of Michigan totaled 22 points apiece, tying Olympian Chris Brooks and beating out Kanji Oyama, who totaled 18. Oyama was added to the team, but McCallum and Cole were not.

What’s more, McCallum won the vault title outright and would seem to be an obvious choice for the national team, but alas, the mystery that is the men’s team point system.

The totaled points can be seen here. …

Moldauer Wins Winter Cup Title

Tsuk double pike. Finals: 14.950 (5.6, 9.350)

Response from Daniel Steiner:

After Mouldar, modi, bower and whittenburg were selected via all around scores, the committee decides the rest of the team based on the strengths and weaknesses of the team as whole. While Mcallum clearly has one of the best vaults in the country, that is all he really offers in the grand scheme of things. Penev, naddour and whittenburg all perform similar valued vaults but it’s their strengths on other events, such as naddour on PH, that makes their perceived value higher than single event specialists. The same issue arose in 2013 when Michael Newburger won the PH title at winter cup outright, yet wasn’t selected to the team. One trick ponies don’t have much of a place on the national team anymore.

Balance Beam Situation – RQS

BBS posts the most detailed review each week. Check whether your favourite top teams are up or down.

The introduction of RQS this week didn’t change much at the very top of the rankings, but it did produce quite a few shakeups lower down. Benefiting were teams that have competed in more than six meets so far and can drop their weak scores, like Georgia, as well as teams with relatively even home and away totals, like Missouri and Iowa.

By contrast, switching to RQS was trouble for teams that haven’t competed in as many meets so far—most notably Southern Utah because of not being in the rankings at all, but also teams like Boise State that are still beset by one low score hanging around. Also hurt were Washington and Cal, whose reliance on home scores to bump up those totals was exposed by the switch to RQS. Road work to do there. …

Maggie Nichols went 39.925 in the all-around. … As far as I can tell, it’s the highest AA score since Mohini Bhardwaj went 39.975 in 2001 …. Nichols received a 10 on each event from at least one judge, which brings about a little germ of a thought about whether she can match Karin Lichey’s 40 at some point in the four years …

Gymnasts from schools outside the top 25 who scored over 9.900 …

  • Caroline Morant, Brown – 9.925, FX
  • Morgan Lane, North Carolina – 9.925, FX
  • Chloe Cluchey, West Virginia – 9.925, FX
  • Katy Clements, Central Michigan – 9.925, BB
