USA Gymnastics Alumni Network
USAG did not have an Alumni program?
That’s surprising.
“As a past member of the national team, I think the Alumni Network is an incredible opportunity to interact and connect not only with gymnasts from my competitive days, but also the many talented athletes who have represented the USA at any point in time,” said David Durante, chair of the Athletes’ Council, athlete director on the USA Gymnastics Board of Directors, and 2008 Olympic Team alternate.
“I think having a specific place where this special group of gymnasts can meet and interact will regenerate the camaraderie and friendship that spans across disciplines and careers. I also hope this will keep our best and brightest engaged and involved in our sport in the years to come.”
To join the conversation and the alumni group, anyone who has been a member of a U.S. Senior National Team can go to Facebook’s USA Gymnastics Alumni Network and request to be a member. …

Asuka inspired by Kohei
… Rio 2016 was definitely her best major competition to date, as she placed eighth in the all-around and fourth in the team final (the best finish for the Japanese women’s team since 1964).
“After the Rio Olympics, I was kind of burned out, physically and mentally,” Asuka recently told us. “But [my passion] came back and now I’m training for the World Championships in Montreal.” …
“I was actually thinking of retiring after Rio,” Asuka admits, “but as I saw Kohei [Uchimura] become the first pro gymnast in Japan, and he is still making progress…I started thinking [that I should do the same]. I started thinking [about bringing] the women’s team up on the stage just like men’s team. So I decided to keep competing until Tokyo 2020.” …

Among the outstanding individuals Counsil coached were former Sycamore great Kurt Thomas and Dave Seal, another ISU Hall of Fame member.
Jake Dalton retires
Double Olympian (2012, 2016) Jake Dalton is hanging up the grips.
One of the all time greats for team USA.
… The 25-year-old fan favorite from Reno, Nevada is now focused on helping manage his family’s Gymnastics Nevada gyms in Reno and Sparks.
“I’m trying to build myself up and save up to get into an ownership role, so I can purchase the gyms from them,” Dalton said. “That’s definitely my long-term goal: to stay in the sport, help kids go as far as possible in the sport, [and] make a lot of memories.” …

Kohei v Oleg in Rio
I was OK with Uchimura winning over Oleg. But I wouldn’t have complained if it had gone the other way.

Cuban Gymnastics in 2017
David Eaton, TURN Managing Director and Founder, posted a retrospective on Cuban men’s Gymnastics: Lopez, Roche, Cuervo, Richards, Suarez, Tamayo.
Eaton visited the Nacional Escuela de Alto Rendimiento (National School of High Performance) in the suburbs of Havana, Cuba – a trip which was interrupted by the death of former leader, Fidel Castro. Click through to read his very interesting essay.
The Cuban Mystique

Many Cuban gymnasts defected over the years, most recently in Toronto 2015.
Four athletes are coming to Worlds 2017 Montreal. Hopefully they are all happy enough at home to return after the meet.
