Men’s P&G Championships

The 2016 Men’s P&G Gymnastics Championships begin on Friday in Hartford, Connecticut, and will feature a field of 11 men who have combined for 39 U.S. titles and 12 world championships medals.

The competition will determine both the men’s senior national champions and national team, as well as the athletes who will advance to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials on June 23-25 in St. Louis. From there, five men will be chosen to represent Team USA at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games.

U.S. Men’s Gymnastics Championships preview

guest post by Shelli Koszdin:

If I had to bet, I would put money on Donnell Whittenburg and John Orozco to make it to Rio. …

My longshot picks to make it to Rio are Akash Modi, Yul Moldauer, or Sean Melton. …

Click through for an excellent preview. See why Shelli doesn’t necessarily consider Sam Mikulak a lock. (Sam is a lock, I’d say. As are Donnell and John.)

Elisa Chirino rehab update

Elisa Chirino fell badly on Bars March 25, 2014. Elisa, now 19, is a paraplegic.

A reminder for all of us to do everything possible to prevent dangerous falls.

37 DEGREES posted a lengthy documentary on her life in German. (VIDEO)

Isabela‘s Beam was one of her best ever. One of the best in the world. But she fell on 1/1. 😦

Ellie was not 100% coming into the meet. Looked super happy to have competed all 4. Fall on Bars. Easier 2nd vault than usual (to qualify to the Vault final).

Brittany competed FX! Looked great AA … but missed her Beam dismount.

Money-in-the-bank Maddy hit 4/4. Still improving. What College coach was smart enough to recruit that girl? šŸ™‚

I love Megan Roberts. Always have. She’d be on the Olympic team if I had to name it right now.

Other standout routines include Maegan Chant 13.625 FX. I thought Shallon Olsen was underscored with a 13.675 FX. Shallon will easily win vault, as usual. No Amanar as yet, however. Sabrina Gill‘s 14.100 Bars.

Rose-Laying Woo is a definite contender for Rio. But her training has been limited this season due to back pain.

Canada has never had so much depth. National Team Director Dave Brubaker: “It’s a nice problem to have.”

Junior High Performance was quite an impressive show. There are no weak gymnasts in this category.

For the first time I can recall the highlights were mostly Tumbling / Vault. Typically high potential gymnasts who have not yet finished growing are not all that powerful. This generation is very powerful. Sage Urban‘s Yurchenko 1 1/2 was super. 9.3 E-score.

Ana Padurariu looks fantastic, as usual. Her teammate Jade Chrobok was happy to compete 4 apparatus. She’s only been back to full training for about 9 days following minor injuries.

Haley de Jong is on a roll. She hit 4/4 today. Coach Dorina Stan was happy with the performance. Haley won Gymsport 2016 in Anadia, Portugal in March. It’s been a good season.

Unlike past years, there is no separate AA Final later in the week. All that is left for High Performance Juniors is Apparatus Finals. Seems I was wrong on this. There is a sudden victory AA Final coming up. šŸ™‚
