Catalina Ponor to Rio?

Romania will send either Cata or Larisa Iordache. Both wonderful. Either would have a good chance for finals.

Larisa is the better gymnast. And I assumed Larisa would end up being the Olympian.

But Larisa is not competing. (Hand injury.) Cata is. And very successfully.

I recently heard a great Ponor story. While training in Puerto Rico, she climbed on to the Beam. Did not fall or jump down for 55 minutes. 🙂

Ellie Black – Beam

6.20 difficulty | 14.700 final score

Impressive considering Ellie had not put in all the routines she’d wanted in advance of Nationals due to a minor ankle injury.

Aliya MUSTAFINA – Beam

She led Beam in Qualifications. 14.733 = Difficulty : 6.000 ; Execution : 8.733

Katarzyna Jurkowska – Gainer 2/1

Though Beam Gainer dismounts are devalued next Code, I believe we’ll see more in future.

Personally I like them. As as coach I like that you don’t have to spend much time warming them up at the meet.

And I love this new variation. 🙂

New Quad, New Rules

Justine Kelly on FloGymnastics put together a series of posts on changes in the 2017-2020 Code of Points:

• 2017-2020 Code of Points – Part 1

• 2017-2020 Code of Points – Vault & Bars

•  2017-2020 Code – Beam & Floor

Beam should have more variety next cycle as many skills have been raised in difficulty.

Don’t count on all those changes surviving, however. A new President is coming in. I’ll be surprised if this is the final draft.
