Alt and Verniaiev’s performances in London assured their national federations the 2017 FIG World Cup series title in Women’s and Men’s Artistic Gymnastics. The winners of the World Cup series are determined by a points total based on athlete rankings at each of the three World Cup competitions. Verniaiev’s victories in Stuttgart and London, as well as a silver medal finish at the AT&T American Cup in March assured Ukraine would win on the men’s side.

Alt’s victories at the same meet, combined with Kim Bui’s fourth-place finish at the American Cup, lifted the Germans to the Women’s title. Additionally, the three top-ranked athletes in the All-around World Cup standings received prize money between 15-25,000 Swiss Francs.

NCAA Bars champions …

Yep.

McMurtry/Bailey/Finnegan/Ross/Lehrmann/Nichols/Kupets/Dabritz/Ding/Liukin … I may be missing a few. 🙂

You’d think having 6 judges would reduce the number of ties.

LSU, Florida, Alabama advance

Not much controversy on session 2.

1. LSU- 198.2750
2. Florida- 197.8125
3. Alabama- 197.6000

Nebraska was great with 197.2125. But Alabama was better. And the Tide finished with a higher score.

Congratulations to coach D-D Breaux and everyone at LSU.

McMurtry NCAA AA Champion 2017

Well deserved. Alex was perfect today.

1. Alex McMurtry 39.8125
2. MyKayla Skinner 39.6125
3. Kiana Winston 39.6

Mykayla Skinner – Floor

Judging “mitigation“:

… lessening the force or intensity of something unpleasant … the act of making a condition or consequence less severe …

Like it or not, judges are influenced by difficulty. MyKayla’s routine is far, far more difficult than any other in NCAA. Many judges evaluate it less severely than the comparatively simple 10.0 routines with only 2 tumbling lines.

Personally I feel the NCAA is ready for rule changes rewarding more difficulty legally. O’Hashi on Beam, Peng on Bars, Mykayla on Floor, the double twisting Yurchenkos, etc.

NCAA in 2017

This has been the best season … ever.

Dvora Meyers:

… The sport has been shown live on TV for several hours every weekend. Attendance at meets has been steadily climbing every week …

In 2009, there were 1,684 Level 10 gymnasts and just 79 elites.

And in 2017, the number of registered Level 10s in the U.S. is 3,005, nearly double what it was eight years ago. Simply put, there are now a lot of high-level gymnasts in the United States, more than enough to fill out the rosters of several NCAA programs, not just the top ones. …
