good vs bad mistakes
Dr. Patrick Cohn:
Cal Berkeley women’s gymnastics head coach Justin Howell makes a distinction between good mistakes and bad mistakes.
Howell is not bothered by his gymnasts making mistakes as long as they are aggressive. Howell has sold his team on his philosophy regarding mistakes which has helped his team produce in high-pressure meets.
The Bears entered the 2017 season opening meet, the NorCal Classic with an aggressive “go-for-it” mindset rather than worrying about mistakes.
The Bears came out of the gate extremely strong on vault, scoring 9.75 or above on every individual routine but had difficulty on the next rotation, the bars.
Despite a couple of falls on the bars, the Bears won the meet for their third NorCal Classic title in three years.
Howell was impressed with his team’s aggressiveness but that aggressiveness is a direct result of not fearing mistakes.
HOWELL: “Their mistakes were good mistakes. They were doing big, aggressive gymnastics, and that’s what I like to see.” …

North Carolina v Florida #BETRUE

Recall that the NBA, NCAA and others decided to boycott North Carolina because of the State government’s intolerant HB2 bill.
North Carolina welcomed No. 3 Florida to Carmichael Arena Friday night for its first home dual meet of the 2017 season. The Gators proved worthy of their lofty ranking, posting a 197.325, while the youthful Tar Heels posted an encouraging 194.200. ..
A school-record 4,071 fans were in attendance Friday evening to watch the Gators and Tar Heels at Carmichael Arena. …
The two teams wore rainbow-themed #BETRUE t-shirts, and the Tar Heels tossed commemorative shirts to the crowd, many of whom were wearing rainbow ‘NC’ buttons. …

Kentucky over Auburn
Kentucky wasted no time in breaking a program high set just one week ago. After posting a 196.950 at Florida last weekend, the No. 9 Wildcats turned around and scored a 197.100 in their home opener in front of the sold out crowd inside Memorial Coliseum on Friday night. UK took down No. 11 Auburn, 197.100 – 195.800, earning its first Southeastern Conference win of the year. …
