2015 Worlds Glasgow – legacy

The best World Championships in history, I’d say.

The 2015 World Gymnastics Championships have caused a dramatic increase in the sport’s participation levels in host city Glasgow, it has been claimed.

… attendances for its gymnastics pathway programmes have risen from 75,251 in 2014-15 to 86,206 in 2015-16 – a 15 per cent increase.

Over the same period, attendances at the city’s seven gymnastics clubs are said to have increased from 14,321 to 18,303 – up 28 per cent. …

The 2015 World Gymnastics Championships, which was named Sporting Event of the Year at The Sunday Mail and sportscotland Scottish Sports Awards, was one of the largest single-sport events ever to be hosted in the United Kingdom with a record 594 gymnasts from 87 nations taking part.

Attendances of close to 80,000 watched the action at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro Arena across 10 days of competition …

Gym Mom of the year

Mary Lou Retton 🙂

If you want to see Mary Lou Retton in person on an average weekend in 2016, you can find her in the same place you might have found her in 1984: at a gymnastics meet. Still under 5 feet tall, same megawatt smile, slightly updated haircut.

But, of course, the 1984 Olympic all-around gymnastics champion is not doing flips on the balance beam anymore. And after retiring from competition, she didn’t take the same routes as other gymnastics superstars–she didn’t take up coaching like 1992 Olympian Kim Zmeskal-Burdette, try her hand at judging like 2008 Olympian Chellsie Memmel or have a career as a commentator like 2008 Olympic champion Nastia Liukin.

Retton is just cheering, enjoying life in the stands as the mother of four daughters, all of whom are involved in gymnastics. …

Kohei averages 92.350

Over 2 days, the first being All Japan Championships.  I’d say the King is ready for Rio.

1. Kohei Uchimura 93.35 91.30 184.65
2. Ryohei Kato 90.70 89.40 180.10
3. Yusuke Tanaka 90.95 89.05 180.00
4. Yuya Kamoto 90.15 89.25 179.40
5. Kenzo Shirai 87.70 89.70 177.40
6. Kazuma Kaya 89.25 87.55 176.80

Amanda Turner:

After silver medals the past two Olympics, the Japanese are aiming to recapture the Olympic team title they last won in 2004. The NHK results show a Japanese team of the top five gymnasts will be tough to beat; calculating the top three scores on each event Thursday results in a team score of 278.45 — nearly than 8 points higher than the winning 270.818 that Japan scored in the Glasgow team final.

Uchimura Captures 8th Straight NHK Cup

Uchimura had already been named to the Olympic team. Kato was added based on this result. The rest of the team is yet to be named.

Trinidad approves Marisa Dick for Olympics

Worst case scenario would have been neither gymnast going to Rio.

Good luck Marisa.

Marisa

And despite the controversy over the manner of Williams’ deselection—on the eve of the Test event—the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) ruled today, in a press conference at the Olympic House in Port of Spain, that Dick will go. …

Yet, even as Lewis endorsed Dick, he suggested that the TTGF could be disciplined under Clause 13 of its constitution—which is entitled “Measures and Sanctions”—and lamented the position that the TTOC found itself in. It is the first time that the TTOC has ever invoked that clause.

“It is a dark cloud over the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic movement,” said Lewis. “Public confidence in the governance of sport has been shaken… We deplore the situation that the ttoc has found itself in.”

That’s the official decision. Read Lauren Hopkin’s overview of the situation.

Nellie Kim – Bars

She truly was super talented. Better, perhaps, than Nadia at times during their era.

NEW recruits at Oklahoma

Everyone knows K.J. Kindler can work miracles with pretty much any recruit who shows up at Oklahoma.

But she’s got her hands full with these two – (former) football players Baker Mayfield and Nila Kasitati.

reviving Belarus Gymnastics

Kylie Dickson will represent Belarus at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

This was a controversial decision. Nellie Kim – President of the FIG Women’s Technical Committee and vice president of the Belarusian Gymnastics Federation – played a key role in the decision to send two American trained Belorussians (who’d not actually ever been to Belarus) to 2015 Worlds.

Will Kylie Dickson inspire gymnasts who actually live in Belarus?

I doubt it.

But here’s some good news:

… The Belarus Gymnastics Association has set a task to revive the former glory and traditions of this sport. Particularly intensive work in this area began a year and a half ago, when Helen Skripel, a famous businesswoman in Belarus, became the Association’s Chair. These ambitious plans have become one of the priorities of her work and the Association’s activities.

To implement the “Revival Plan” the comprehensive program has been developed based on the study of problems, consultations with highly qualified specialists, including foreign ones, and bold marketing ideas. The program has received strong support from the Ministry of Sport and Tourism of Belarus and the National Olympic Committee.

The basic items of the project are sports facilities, coaching staff and promising athletes. Several gyms have already been renovated and equipped with the latest equipment. World-renowned expert Oleg Ostapenko has started working as the head coach of the women’s national team. …

Altadore Gymnastics 50th Anniversary

February 10-13, 2017. In conjunction with their annual Ed Vincent Invitational.

Altadore 50 years

It’s my home club. I was amongst the first boys to join Altadore. Spent about 23 years at that Gym.

Ed Vincent has been there 30 years or more. That sounds like a lot. But it’s rumoured Ed is well over 100 years old already. 🙂

can anyone beat Kohei?

Max is hitting. Oleg is hitting. Manrique is rapidly improving.

Sooner or later someone will defeat Kohei in the AA. I’d say Uchimura is the man to beat in Rio. But the contenders may be within one fall of him at this point.

At age 27, Kohei is not sticking as consistently as he has in the past.
