Clean execution was the key for reigning World Still Rings champion as he trumped 2012 Olympic champion Arthur Zanetti to deprive Brazil’s “Lord of the Rings” of a second gold after London. Petrounias, Zanetti and bronze medallist Denis Abliazin of Russia performed equally difficult routines, but Petrounias ended his flawless exercise with a stuck dismount.

Dutch gymnast Yuri van Gelder has been expelled from the Olympic Games by the Dutch Olympic Committee and will be sent home immediately for violating team rules, including consuming alcohol. …
In 2009, van Gelder was suspended from competition for one year by the KNGU after testing positive for cocaine during a competition. He underwent a three-month drug treatment in Scotland. However, in October 2010, he was withdrawn from the world championships in Rotterdam after admitting subsequent cocaine use.

He will be replaced in the Rings final by French gymnast Danny Pinheiro Rodrigues.
French gymnast Samir Aït Saïd has thanked his supporters and vowed to come back following the horrific injury he sustained on vault Saturday during the qualification at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
“I’ll come back stronger at the Tokyo Olympics to win Olympic gold,” he said Saturday evening from the hospital in Rio, where he is due to undergo surgery. “I also want to thank my teammates and all the staff and fans for their support.”
His prelims score of 15,833 makes the World Champion the man to beat, so far.
