reality check – could Khorkina beat Biles?

Hmmm …

After Valentina, the next Russian spokesperson most often wrong, most delusional is the great Svetlana Khorkina.

wrapping up Women’s AA

Uchimura has won 6 AA titles. Just sayin’, Simone.

The Olympic Channel posted an excellent summary putting Simone’s 5th into historical perspective.

SIMONE BILES CAPTURES FIFTH WORLD ALL-AROUND TITLE IN STUTTGART

1. Simone Biles USA 58.999
2. Tang Xijing CHN 56.899

4. Ellie Black CAN 56.232 (withdrew from Beam final)
5. Nina Derwael BEL 56.033

11. Aline Friess FRA 54.798
12. Alice Kinsella GBR 54.765

It was a much better competition than the team final. I speculate the Beam was widened for AA. 😀

Two other podium contenders had bad meets: Giorga Villa (ITA) 16th, and Melanie de Jesus dos Santos (FRA) 20th.

The NEW TO ME star of the Final was Aline Friess.

Jade Barbosa ACL injury on Vault

Rebeca Andrade suffered another ACL injury in June. It’s been a devastating year of injuries for Brazil.

Double Olympian Jade Barbosa has been diagnosed with an ACL tear … double twisting Yurchenko …

Brasil has missed the chance to qualify as a full team for Tokyo Olympics. Since her ACL tear would likely take from six to eight months recovery …

Teammate Flavia Saraiva secured her Olympic spot by qualifying to this Worlds’ all around final in 10th place. …

Jade tied with Ferrari for the Bronze AA medal in this same Stuttgart arena in 2007.

D & E scores – AA Final 2019

Nina had the highest E-score. Simone the highest D-score.

Simone’s Mic Drop

A mic drop is the gesture of intentionally dropping one’s microphone at the end of a performance or speech to signal triumph. Don’t do that … unless you are the G.O.A.T.

And you add it to your choreography at the end of the 4th apparatus. 5th AA title.

Then it’s very cool. 😊

Mykayla Skinner suggested it to her, getting the idea from a fan.

NEW Boguinskaia interview

Now that Simone won in the same arena, let’s look back at the 1989 Stuttgart World Champion.

Dvora Meyers:

Thirty years ago, the Soviet squad, one of the greatest women’s gymnastics teams ever assembled, won the team gold medal at the 1989 world championships in Stuttgart.

… Soviet gymnasts showcased difficulty that was years ahead its time and they performed with style to spare. Their floor rotation was one for the ages—Olga Strazheva performed to Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring,” Olesya Dudnik to Gershwin’s “Second Rhapsody,” and Natalia Laschenova’s to Grieg’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King.”

The star of the team was Svetlana Boguinskaia, who won both the all-around and floor titles …

For Svetlana Boguinskaia, the best part of winning was the microwave.

Ellie Black interview after the AA Final

Proud of her team. Happy with the decision to go for her harder vault last apparatus. That final landing hurt so she’s having the injury evaluated.

Proud to finish 4th AA in the World. And — it’s the 3rd anniversary of doing the Worlds AA Final with Brooklyn (14th hitting 4/4)
