should male gymnasts train shirtless?

There’s a good thread on this topic on  Gymnastics Coaches Skills & Drills. (Closed Facebook Group. You’d need to apply to join.)

Plenty of pros and cons. Some Gyms discourage training shirtless. Some do not allow it. Most do.

At the end of the day, however, it’s not going to be easy to change the culture. I expect most older male gymnasts will be training shirtless for decades to come.

  1. With respect, why would the culture need to change? Why are some threatened by an image – any image? If there are some cause and effect relationships between shirtless male gymnasts and something bad, please show me the bodies.

“What is objectionable, what is dangerous, about extremists is not that they are extreme, but that they are intolerant. The evil is not what they say about their cause but what they say about their enemies.” RF Kennedy.

It appears to me that the thought-police have way too much free time.

  2. ‘Why are some threatened by an image – any image? ‘ I can’t read the thread, but seriously, is it something to do with this? The only bad thing that might happen to a shirtless male gymnast is he might get cold. Then he can put a shirt on.

  3. The unequivocal answer is “yes!”. Training shirtless is a part of the MAG culture and is the best way to train safely and effectively.
