Concussion – the film

Have you seen Will Smith as Dr. Bennet Omalu, a Nigerian forensic pathologist who fights against efforts by the National Football League to suppress his research on chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) brain degeneration suffered by professional football players?

Anyone who boxes or plays football should know the risks by now. I’m more concerned for coaches and athletes in sports who assume they are at low risk of micro-trauma injury to the brain. Trampoline? Artistic Gymnasts?

  1. This coach takes concussions very seriously. There are great resources through CDC and other on-line sources that can be easily brought up on your phone. It doesn’t replace doctors but it will help you know if you should go to one.

  2. When I was coaching level 5/6 gymnastics I had one athlete who over rotated a skill and face planted onto a mat in the pit. When she sat up she was holding her head and I knew she needed to go to a doctor. I immediately sat her down and went to the owner to ask him to call the parent, but he said she’d be fine in a minute and to not worry. I went and called the parent instead who came to pick her daughter up but said she was probably just being dramatic. The girl was spaced out, kept her head in her hands, and said she had a headache. She never went to a doctor and was back at the gym the following day. It’s great that this movie brought more attention to concussions and their affect later in life. Hopefully it’ll help the gym world wake up to the risks.
