W&M Men’s Gymnastics reinstated

The men’s gymnastics team has been reinstated at W&M at least through 2021-22 — the university will reset its process to determine long-term sustainability for the athletic department.

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone that sent emails, wrote letters, pledged, called, etc.

We are THRILLED that both of our teams have been reinstated, but we still need YOU. The support from our community has never been more important, and will be crucial to the long term success for both of our programs.

Elise Ray-Statz leaves U of Washington

Elise Ray-Statz has resigned from University of Washington after 9 years.

Her family is moving out of the Seattle area.

Too bad. Elise did a terrific job.

Her assistant Ralph Rosso had been named interim head coach for the upcoming season.

Cortland & Brockport 2021 competitions cancelled

Will other Universities come to this decision?

I’m worried.

Outbreaks are likely at Colleges and Universities. For example, State University of New York Oneonta has had more than 700 students and faculty test positive for COVID-19. Student population is about 3000.

William & Mary reinstates women’s gymnastics

Great news.

Unfortunately, the Men are still scheduled to be cut after this season.

Roethlisberger on Men’s NCAA Gymnastics

After this season, there could be only 12 NCAA teams remaining.

John Roethlisberger:

… men’s gymnastics is the hardest sport to follow, understand, and tell who’s winning, even more so than women’s gymnastics. In 2018, the women’s finals of the U.S. Gymnastics Championships had over three times as many viewers as the men’s competition, according to Sports Business Daily.

Roethlisberger believes people want to know the score in real time and what needs to happen in the next turn for a team to take or retain the lead. …

The meets also take too long, Roethlisberger said. He said he would shorten all events to three-up, three-count.

He said he would downsize the gymnasts on teams to 12 and use a club program as the junior varsity program. Many programs have more than 20 on their roster.

“I honestly would go as far as cutting the entire budget, other than the coach and maybe three scholarships,” Roethlisberger said

Mike Burns:

… the proposal was modified in the last minute and Outdoor Track was NOT dropped. So with men’s gymnastics, men’s tennis, and men’s indoor track being dropped the department is saving $1.6 million.

U of Alaska Anchorage UPDATE

There’s still hope.

Interim Coach Marie-Sophie Boggasch confirms that University of Alaska Anchorage Gymnastics will be saved if $888,000 (half in cash, half in pledges) is raised by February 15, 2021.

The Collegiate Gymnastics Growth Initiative / Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association organized a GoFundMe: charity.gofundme.com/saveuaagymnastics

On that site, there are a couple other links that can take people to the pledge form (ideally we only have to raise half of the amount if everyone could potentially contribute the same via a pledge for next year) and also to UAA directly for donations of $1,000 or more.

About our program:

– Consistently volunteers the highest amount of hours among any UAA athletic team (last year: 554h between 18 team members)

– 2019-2020 team GPA: 3.64

– Several first-generation college students

– Broke 21 school records in the last 2 seasons
